Sputtering Disco

My '98' Disco sputters, backfires and boggs down with anything more than 1/2 throttle. My brothers RRC was doing the same thing and the dealer told him he had some bad injectors and a bad fuel rail. Sounds about right. He had just replaced his exhaust, O2's, wires, plugs, fuel filter, etc.... Dealer told me that they had never heard a Disco make a sound like mine and that it might be my cats making the backfire because of excess fuel getting built up in them and that's what's causing the backfire.

So what does it sound like to you guys? And if it does sound like injectors, where can I get em cheap or rebuilt? Cheapest I've found for injectors is a C note and the rail is 3 hundred. Just trying to put off the dreaded replace-everything-only-to-find-out-it's-something-completely-different syndrome that we are all used to.

Help me please before I develop a bleeding ulcer over this problem.

Backfire from excessive fuel

Is your Check Engine light on?
My guess would be if there's enough fuel to "backfire" in the cats, your upstream-of-the-cats O2 sensors should read very rich.
Someone described a reasonably safe procedure to check the injectors, together with the fuel rail. Once the archives are back up, do a search.

CE light is on Pete. Been on for about 2 years now and the code reads bad O2 sensors. Never had a problem with it though. Dang I need to get a OBDII reader. Will replace exhaust sooner or later, but don't want to replace the exhaust and still have the same problem. I will check out the archives as soon as they are up.

If the injectors are bad, I just found a site that will fix em for a fraction of the cost of new ones. Anyone who follows this thread and needs their injectors replaced, don't buy em new at close to $200 a pop, go here:

Seems like the way to go. Thanks for the info Peter.

if ce light has been on for 2 yrs you need to have all the codes read (probably a poop load of them if d1) and see what most recent codes are! what you are describing does not sound like injectors or rail! have the codes read @ autozone (for free-@ least in ky.) and post the results, or if the mechanic looked at it-call that shop and get the codes from them and post!

Not symthoms for bad injectors

I had a problem with three bad injectors and what your describing is not the symthoms I was getting when my injectors were bad and leaking gas in the chamber. Basically what I experienced was bad starts when engine was cold. The engine would crank for about ten to fifteen seconds before it would start. I was told this was because of the excess gas in the chamber that needed to be burned or evaporated before the engine could properly start. If you do want to check the injectors and the rail just in case let me know I have a procedure that is pretty straight forward and pretty easy for the home mechanic to do, it just takes about three to four hours depending on how skilled you are. If you need them send me an email and I will reply. Again I don't think its your injectors.

My '96 was doing exactly teh same thing... same symptoms and everything. Read the code adn it turned out to be a bad knock sensor. I replaced the sensor and she now runs great. Unfortunately you won't know untill you find out what the code is, but the symptoms were the same.

Thanks for all the info guys. Going to Autozone tomorrow and getting the CE read off. Called the local dealership that I brought it to and they said they didn't even check the CE because I said it had been on for a while. Nice. More to come.

Brought it to Auto-Zone last night and only got the P1193 code. They said it's almost always the gas cap. Yeah right, I wish. Anyhoo, I guess they are inept at the Auto-Zone I went to because that is the only code they gave me. Talked to my guy at the dealership and he said to bring it on back to him tomorrow morning and he can read off the rest of the codes and let me know what they are. Wish he would've done that last time I brought it in. So...more codes tomorrow.

Went to dealer and had them run the codes. Had two codes and both were 1193. I guess I just have to bite the bullet and replace the exhaust and FOUR O2 sensors. Cheapest I found sensors was about a hundred bucks. I guess that's as low as it gets. Where do I get the generic cats and do they have places for all 4 O2 sensors or do I have to rig it?
