Hi all! I have a gurl friend that's having problems with her "99 D2. It stalls every few minutes. It's weird, 'cause it will start back up after waiting for a few minutes. All lights and vehicle thingys work, including the A/C, windows, radio, etc., and not one warning light. Over half a tank of gas, it doesn't matter if its sitting parked and running or driving, it will just stall/shut off. But, everything else seems to work. What Gives???

Do you have any fault/trouble codes?

Sounds like the crankshaft position sensor on the LH side of the engine is crapping out.
Buy a Bosch #ERR-7354 or Echlin #CSS9280 (supposedly a Bosch brand in NAPA box).

Okay, It a consensus boys, for Crank Sensor (CPS), BIG THANKS!

BUT WHY DOES IT STALL OFF AND ON? I mean, did the ENGINEERS think that it’s serious enough to force a stall but not enough to prevent restart only minutes later?

Check Surrounding wires, Will do, thanks!

She's taking it to a mechanic in San Francisco. She's never been under the hood of a car before.

I like to think DISCOWEB is a great resource at keeping your mechanic honest! ; - )

Which shop? The locals I know in or near S.F go to Euroland 4x4. Philippe is one of the best Rover guys on the West Coast.

It is probably becoming heat-soaked and either the resistance increases, or the circuit opens. When the engine stops, it cools enough to run until it gets hot again.

That said, this isn't the standard failure mode. Typically, once started, they will run until turned off, and then refuse to start until they cool again.

This can be an easy fix if one wishes to try it themselves.

I will even share my secret method of reconnecting if you would like to try yourself.

Thanks Swedjen2 for your referral, she's looking at getting the work done at 11 street Auto Repair in 'Cisco.

I'll check Euroland 4x4 for as well :)

Thanks ptschram for the information. You've peeked my curiosity. So, if it's "HEAT SOAKED", does this suggest the failure is a symptom rather than the cure? In other words, something else is causing the "HEAT SOAK"? :-(

PLEASE DO TELL ME THE EASY FIX :)

I'm with PT when he says this is not the common way these sensors fail. I would be wiggling harnesses and what have you. But also totally agree that the crank sensor is almost always the fix for a stalling Disco2.
What he means when he says heat soak is when it's hot. Not overheating, just fully warmed up. Then normally you could let the truck sit till it cools down and it would run again.

That isn't just a Land Rover problem, I had a Neon (please don't laugh too hard!) that also died when it warmed up, which also turned out to be a Crank Position Sensor.
A...Neon, huh? Well, if you're looking for it, it's parked in front of my neighbors house. Come and get it.
