Any chance you have a strong magnet you would put on a stick or rope and go fishing for the bolt? We would save the magnet off a dead audio speaker for this purpose. Used this technique to recover someone's keys that got dropped as they were getting onto my boat.
I don't know the answer to the bolt length question. Just thought I'd give you an idea of a way to recover the bolt in the grass.

An idea you may want to use... buy 2" bolts with regular bolt head and a couple of extra nuts. Use the nuts to extend the bolt head far enough to get a regular wrench on it rather than having to rig up extensions to get to a socket hex head.
