Still over heating?

I have a 95 Disco 106K. So the last time I posted was when I was having over heating issues. So what I have done up to this point was to flush the system. Topped off with a quality coolant. I replaced the thermastat and gasket. The water pump is not squeeling or making any noises. The fan clutch and fan rotate smooth without any issues (no play). The vehicle over heats about 30 minutes into driving. The only thing is that when I feel the upper ratiator hose how much flow should be going through? The fans on the radiator kicks in about ten-15 minutes into driving. Could this be electrical? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Sounds to me either there's an air bubble in there displacing the water or the core is plugged up with gunk. When you last flushed or drained the radiator, could you have gotten air in the system? May want to double check your thermostadt for proper orientation and function too.

pull the radiator and have it re-cored or drop in a replacement, ten years is a long time on a radiator, some will say rod it out, thats when they split it apart and shove steel rods through the water passages. sounds abusive right? it is. sometimes this will create other problems like leaks, duh. but either way take a good look at the radiator, that is assuming you burped the cooling system after the thermostat and shiat. did you check for mud clogging the radiator, between the condensor? just a thought. if its all clear. re-vamp the rad.

Its possible that air is in the system. That is where my knowledge ends. What are my options on "burping" the system?

When you burp it, just make sure you have the heater controls on full heat... rotated all the way to the right. If not, you won't get the air out of the heater core.

To burp it, you remove the radiator plug and the overflow tank cap. Start the truck, turn the heat on full. Keep running it and top up the fluid in the rad when you see the level drop. Wait till the thermostat opens (top rad hose gets really hot) and let it run for a few more minutes then things should be fine.

I found that on my truck, I also needed to drive around for a bit as well.

i am assuming that you arent loosing any fluid!

if not and you didnt burp it when you filled it this would be first to try. if it were the fans it would more than likely overheat mainly at a stand still (red light)

if loosing fluid... hose, water pump, head gasket

Engine Overheating

I just went through a whole ordeal to get my Disco 95 to stop overheating. It ended up being the Viscous Unit that was bad. I tested mine the same way you did, spining it to see if there was any play. I called a wrecking yard and got a used one, changed it and problem went away. My temperature stands solid at midrange where it has always been. Also do what these guys are telling you to do, refill your radiator and make sure you get all the air out of the system, the only way to do that is taking the radiator cap off (Have a spare one as the plastic used for this part is very cheap), fill your radiator to the top, run the engine with heat on and let all the air bubble out of the system. I am about to get my radiator rodded, because I am having problem with my A/C cutting out on stop and go traffic only. I've been told that the radiator might be clogged a bit shutting down the compressor as it things the engine is hot. I will post after I get it rodded to see if I recomend it to anyone!!!!

I doubt it has to do with air in the system. Take the car out for 25 minutes to warm it up. Take off the cap of the overflow and look to see if there are bubbles or bubbling. If so you have a leak in the system. If that's the case you have a leak in the system causing it to loose pressure. Coolant's properties to cool change with pressure. This is all good, but I have a feeling it's your radiator. I know this is the last thing you want to replace because they are $500, but pull it and check it out. Believe me I replaced just about the entire cooling system to find out that it was the radiator. When I pulled it out you could see that there was only 25% of the radiator not clogged.

PULL THE RADIATOR OUT! It's not hard.

If you call around in your area, you may find someone who will submerge your rad in water, hook up a supply and return hose, pump water through it and send low frequency sound through the tank of water that your rad is sitting in, I had this done to arad several years ago, and it did the job, Cost was about 50.00, a good rad builder will be able to tell is this is dooable, or a waste of time!

Can you seperate the radiator to see if it is clogged? I found a 99 radiator at the junk yard for $200 but I want to see if I can confirm what the issue is. Recently from driving it does not over heat as far as I can tell. Took it out for half hour drive. I am not looosing ay water until I turn off the engine and the coolant resivoir blows. Any ideas? Could this be a failed coolant tank or cap? Lastly my check engine light came on and it shows a code 14. I used a thermostat from auto zone should I have gone oem?

code 14 (if i am not mistaking) is thermostat! if you had never changed a thermostat before you could have put it in backwards or something. or, could have gotten a defective thermostat!! this happened to me on an old nissan!
thermostat is cheap cheap and does not take long to change! rule this out first!

as for the thermostat, i have an aftermarket on mine right now and have had for a while w/o any probs! i have always bought aftermarket for all cars i have owned with just that one problem!
if you want to see if it is defective, just toss it in a pan of water and bring it to a boil. if the spring expands under heat it is good if not, get another!
