Strength of the D2 Rear Door Tire Mount

Hey all,

When you flip the rear door tire mount on a D2, the two middle holes for the bolts do not line up. Will 4 bolts be enough to support the weight of the larger tire? Is there a plate in the door panel to add strength?

A 285/75/16 tire does not fit properly on the rear door tire mount. My mechanic suggested I flip it over because of the angle. I did and it fits but now I'm concerned about the strength of this option with only 4 bolts.

Thanks for your suggestions
Scott

it'll be fine...the bolts will be last the thing you have to worry about...

I don't think he's worried about the stength of the bolts but rather the material they are affixed to. In other words, are only four points of contact, as opposed to six, enough to support a large tire? I would assume so since this is a common mod, but I have no first hand experience.

When I flipped mine I drilled additional holes so I could us all the bolts. After about 6 years, the tire carrier itself rotted away.

thanks guys- I put the high-lift on there, too (of course, I just put the door panels, et al, back on) I'll feel more comfortable with the two extra holes.

I wish I had heard of this mod about two years ago when I put my lift and tires on, I bought the bracket from RTE. I really should search these threads more.

I wouldnt be worried about the mount but the door hinges with all the extra weight.. especially when you start adding a hilift and a 33 inch tire that probably weighs well over 100lbs on a rim

Id worry about the hinges, too. if the carrier concerns you, lucky 8 has a dang fine carrier with a cb antenna mount, bolted right up, haven't concerned myself with it since. I dont have a hi-lift jack up there tho, just a 265 tire and cb antenna.

Don't know about D2 doors...
Today, out of a blue, rear window shattered in my D1 while it was simply sitting at the curb; the weather was about 67F, dry, and overcast - no direct sunlight. No signs of any impact - the entire glass appeared slightly bowed out.
I think it is likely to be a result of years of carrying a 265/75 on the rear door, which stopped fitting properly when it was almost torn off by the 65mph wind.
And yesterday's trip to the desert must have contributed to that.
