So noticed this today and dont remember seeing it when i pulled the heads. I know when i pulled the heads fluid went into the cylinders and i soaked it up. Could this be a slipped liner? No steam cleaning on the valves just the reddish hue on the liner.

Engine didnt over heat, no ticking sound when on, just a slow leak about half the resevoir over a two week period. Gaskets showed wear. I know i need to pressure test the block to be certain but if anyone has experience with this please chime in. Idk but the bottom picture is the cylinder by the coolant port and it has the reddish hue as well but not as much. There also appears to be discoloration on the face of the block but i might just be hoping and looking for the best case that its just a gasket problem.5611056111

"what do you all think on servicing the oil pump gear and gasket along with water pump. No know issue but at 184k miles I’m debating if I should. "

You have it this far stripped down and with that mileage it's a good idea.

The discoloration on the cylinder walls happened to mine also. Oil pump is a great idea, it is the heart of the engine. Also wouldn't hurt to replace timing chain and gears.

Looks just like some surface rust to me -- Whats the big deal?
I have a coolant leak and I'm not sure what IT is so wondering if someone has experience with this or has seen it. Im scared that ITs dexcool seeping into the cylinder Behind the sleeve because IT was slippinv or from a cracked block

I'm not worried about the discoloration, im wondering if it looks related to a dexcool leak.

Pictures kind of suck for long distance diag. but it looks to me like cumbustion gasses leaked past the compression ring. So more could be learned from looking at the head gasket. The compression ring gets beat to shit if the liner is moving. It leaves witness marks and I've even seen them pound off a thin ring that gets wrapped around a valve.

When you all see this at the shop what did you all do or is it considered no biggie?
When the head is removed coolant falls in the cylinder and can cause the discoloration. Stew is correct, look at the hg compression rings if one is deformed or missing it's the liner. Check the hg for any missing material on the surface. Look at the cylinder walls for any scars, the hone marks "criss cross marks" should still be seen depending on mileage. There shouldn't be any straight vertical marks on cylinder wall.
Also our shop is a foreign and domestic engine and transmission repair facility. I didn't want to make the impression that we are a indy rover shop.

I'm betting by now you are done with the job. If your motor was ticking, It would have been the perfect time to replace your lifters. I would have recommended changing the oil pump and water pump along with a new timing chain. Everyone told me not to worry about the timing chain. They said: "It's a chain, it isn't going to break". They may have been right, but I can tell you, the new chain had far less slack in it, and the motor ran noticeably quieter, with the new chain.
