Stuck Lug on Spare

My spare hasn't been off in probably 10-12 years and I went to pull it off to put on a new rear wiper arm and one of the lugs won't budge. I drilled a hole in the cap and have been spraying PB Blaster in it but it hasn't helped. I broke a 1/2" breaker bar.

Any suggestions or tips?

Trouble is I have the boost rims, not standard D1 steel spare and really don't want to damage it. I've thought about trying to make a cone of sheet metal to go around the lug and try that maybe.

Get a better breaker bar and put a 3 ft pipe or the handle from your floor jack on it and break that stud right off the spare carrier.

I will have to go get a good bar, I just broke my second one.

I bought one from an auto parts store for about $20, came with a lifetime warranty. I snapped it when trying to remove lugs from the road wheels that a tire shop had over-tightened. Walked back in and they gave me a new one.

If you still have the two pipes that came with the factory bottle jack the larger of the two will fit over most 1/2" breaker bar handles, but it's not as strong as a floor jack handle.

A real brute force option would be to jack the rear of the truck up, place a 2x4 under the breaker bar handle, and slowly lower the truck. At a certain point too much force could cause other problems - like bending the sheet metal of the rear door.

Chemicals and heat are probably better things to try first. Also, if you can get your hands on a roto-hammer you might have better luck than with a breaker bar.

An impact with a lot of torque might help; especially after hitting the lug with PB blaster. Of course, if it's really stuck, you may spin the lug loose from the tire carrier.

And buy some anti-seize.

x2 on the impact gun. Try tightening it a little bit, then switching back to loosen. Sometimes helps knock things free.

Don't forget to put one of the other nuts loosely in place to hold the rim before going crazy on this one. If the lug snaps off, you may end up with a wheel falling in your face.
