I've changed the oil between 5-6K and use Costco full-synthetic
I think JLR likes Castrol products because they’re a high detergent oil. I buy it from Walmart in 5 Qrt jugs for around $24. They tell me the stuff the dealership sells for lots and lots has a special additive in it, only in the oil you buy at a JLR dealership. I can’t find any info on anything special added to JLR’s oil. But I do remember hearing early on that they put dye in the oil that coats the engine parts. So when they look at returned engines they could kick back a claim if that dye was not present. It would be just like JLR to charge you a ton of money for the dye they need to screw you out of an engine. I suspect that that dye is the special additive. But I have good luck with castrol oil. I run 0-20 in all my turbocharged engines. Even if they call for something like 5-20

Just figure that anything that fails on a 5.0 is basically the same setup on the 3.0. It makes enough power to move the 6,000 lb truck. It sounds kind of sickly compared to the 5.0 when you really let it eat.
So coolant crossover pipe and potential for timing chain issues if they don’t change their oil - any other major items? I’ve driven one of these in a Jag sedan and wasn’t wild about power delivery but need to drive a Rover with one

If you didn't like it in a Jag that might way 4,000 lbs you probably won't like it in a 6,000 lb truck.

VW adds a dye to their spec oils, its like dark green. Looks the same color as Subaru OEM coolant. I've been using pennzoil pure platinum plus, which meets the same spec as the JLR juice and its much cheaper. None of this matters bc these motors are all out of warranty anyway.

Didn’t you have a continual coolant loss issue?
We never exactly figured that one out. The dealership kept blaming/changing the water pump and hoses. I had an indie shop drain and fill the coolant and learned it is tough to do it correctly. They worked on it over a couple of days and since then the level has stayed steady.

Didn't know that about Castrol. What I've done twice with the Costo oil is sent it out for analysis and it came back with good results up to 8K miles. I may try Castrol next time.

Agree, it is about as reactive as a suburban. The 5.0L LR4s I've driven definitely accelerated from a start faster with less effort. But my daily is either a 97NAS or a 200tdi 110 which are both painfully slow as well and I'm so used to it that the SCV6 is actually a pleasant drive.

The JLR Castrol is different than the stuff you buy off the shelf and way more expensive.

But I think it's just the dye they put in it. Do you know for sure it's different? I just don't understand what could be different. And since it's a big secret I think the difference is the dye. The dye that proves to them that you've been paying way too much for oil for way too long.

If you look at the MSDS they're different, but I've never seen a virgin an oil analysis of the two side by side. Either way, the JLR stuff is expensive AF and not worth the money. In 2010? Yea, maybe... the 5.0 was a really cutting edge motor. Not so much anymore.

I wonder what they put in it. To me they lose credibility when they make it a big secret and want 4 times what another quart of Castrol full synthetic costs. I just tonight paid $6 a qrt for the stuff at Walmart.

I think I have some sitting on the shelf in 0w20 I won't use (got it by accident and AB told me to keep it).. I'll send it in to Blackstone if I remember.
