Symptoms of a bad O2 sensor (P0130) code?

Hi all,

I finally resurrected my Disco after years of being garaged. I had the dealership install a new fuel tank as there was a leak and there was still a 20-year old service recall that had never been done in relation to this. A new tank for $10 of gas seemed like something I couldn't pass up.

In order to get the Disco road worthy, I installed a new fuel pump, changed the engine oil, tested the battery, and did other basic maintenance. It starts up on the first crank now and driving around the city streets is no problem.

However, when I took it on the highway yesterday to drive it home (I live about 70-miles from where it was garaged), it started having issues after 30-miles of highway driving. After the first 30-miles , when I would be at speeds above 55MPH it would suddenly lose power for a second or 2 then be fine again then keep doing this continually (like it was stuttering along starving for fuel). Immediately I thought that this must be the VSS.

So I drove home the rest of the way on a state route that has max speed areas of 45MPH and had no issues until I was about 10 minutes from home. At this point, the CEL popped on and it started doing the stuttering thing even at lower speeds around 35MPH. I got home, checked the CEL code and it came up as a P0130 (02 Sensor Circuit Malfunction, Bank 1 Sensor 1).

I know nothing about 02 sensors. Would a faulty 02 sensor lead to the issues described above or is it more likely that both the VSS and 02 sensor are faulty?

Thanks for your help in diagnosing this!

Salud,
Jon

pull the plug on the VSS and run it. You won't have a speedometer but the truck should run fine without it. If the high speed problem persists you can move on to the next possibility. If the high speed problem goes away, your suspicion of the VSS looks like it is a problem (at least one of them)
