Hi,
I'm having to remove my Transfer Case  , and install a replacement on my 1997 Discovery, with automatic transmission. Does anyone have any tips on this process? Like what I will need to make the process go easier? What kind of tools I might need?

Thanks in Advance,
Jon

i also need to do this, mine's ceased up and won't go into low. Can you take just the box out form underneath or do you need to take the engine out too. Anyone know if a D2 box will fit a D1?

Cheers

transfer-case and trans removal is pretty straight forward. but do yourself a favor and build the trans mounting bracket that the shop manual describes. makes life much, much easier.
if you decide not to make a mount, then a couple of floor jacks and some patience will be helpful. and no you don't need to pull the motor to pull the trans/transfer-case.
and yes the transfer-case cn be removed on it's own.
no special tools are needed other than a socket and wrench set.

If using a D2 case to replace your D1 case, make sure it has the CDL lever, if you intend to go off-road.

FWIW....

Whoa Jack, why would you think that just because you can't go into low that you need a t-case replacement? Unless you know otherwise, the culprit is most likely the shiftlock solenoid on top of the t-case housing. This is the mechanism that keeps newbies from shifting into low above 5. But when it malfunctions, it locks you out of low entirely. Diff lock can be still accessible, but it won't even budge into neutral. With the given information, I would bet that this is your problem.

Email me for my phone number if you would like a better explanation and some tips for getting that PITA outta your truck.

I'm not sure what this trans mounting bracket is that you are talking about, but I plan to get a floor jack and modifiy it somewhat to help with the load balance. I plan on just taking out the transfer case not the transmission to go along with it. Looks like I will have to swap quiet a bit of my stuff off of my T-case onto the one I just got shipped to me. They did a cut job on it, and so I can't use the connections it has on it. I suppose I will need to buy new o-rings for the things that need them, and gaskets.

Should I need to jack up the Land Rover to get the T-Case out, or will it just drop to the ground.
