The other pandemic - ugly rims

It just dawned on me as to one of the reasons I think newer cars are less than inspiring. There are a few in the “close to 6 figures and above “ category but I like old school classic lines. RIMS!! What the hell happened to dish, lip, negative offset. I thought the late 80’s Chevy S10 rims were awful and now every car company is throwing on wheels with no lip. Ugh. Now I can’t unsee it.

The no-lip wheels are more expensive to repair when your wife runs them into a curb.

Fuchs are ugly as sin, they do however compliment the abominable p-car steering wheels of the era.
I don’t mind them. Pretty sure there is an abundance of worse factory options. Lol. Fiske and HRE are my favorite pavement rims but not likely to ever shell out the coin necessary to acquire a set for myself.

Is there some marginal aero gain, or is it just styling?

You should see what the factory FUCH wheel for that old turbo looks like in real life. They're ugly. The wheels in that picture are aftermarket and look like 20s with a 305 tire on it lol.

Ok. I wasn’t endorsing old Fuchs as much as it was one of the first pics of rims that had a lot of dish from the factory. Then I was like” what are the odds that new 911’s don’t have and dish? And there it was” so I threw those two pics up as an example. I could have used BMW parallel spoke rims or even some old red steelies with a chrome center cap on a hot rod. I just wish for my own selfish pleasure, that they would go back to making negative offset rims again. Sorry for the rant about nothing important. Lol

I understand what you're saying. I was just pointing out that the wheels on that old 911 are aftermarket wheels. The factory wheels are not nearly as deep and big.

I remember shopping for wheels for my old BMW to replace the fugly stock no-dish wheels. The ballers advertise their wheels with a hundred dolla bill on the lip to show the depth.

In all of the vehicles owned over many years never felt the need to go to an aftermarket wheel. The factory wheel always seemed best. Also try and keep that year on the Rangie although really like 3 spokes. And for sure I’m a fan of Fuchs wheels on older 911s.

I worked with a guy who can only be described as a purist when it comes to stock wheels. He would go on a rant and say "they didn't crash test this car with those shitty wheels on it!"

After I put new wheels on my old BMW, a guy came to my house to buy my old "Type 44s". I had the scuffs filled in and had them sanded down and ready for paint but I abandoned the project when I realized that I'd probably never sell them. I threw them up on Craigslist for the hell of it and I couldn't believe it when this guy responded and gave me $200 for them. When I asked why he wanted them, he popped open his trunk and showed me what his kid did.....there was a portion of a cracked-up brake rotor completely jammed into one of the rim cracks, like it was welded in there. His boy did an A+ curb jump at some point. His car was a lease and he needed to replace the wheels to return the car. Man, I miss that little basic BMW.
