So has anyone else watched this? It was to hot to hunt Saturday and the wife is out of town so after some fruitless channel surfing I decided to give it a try. 8 hours later I had spent my Saturday sitting on the couch watching a TV series I would have never dreamed I would enjoy. Can't really tell you why I enjoyed it. Chess isn't my thing. I think some of it had to do with the era it is set in. I would have been 5-11 or so. Things sure were different.

It was awesome.
Yes it is. I'm not a watcher of the small screen, cable/satellite/whatever, but it may be the best thing I've seen on it.

The lead, Anya Taylor-Joy, is excellent. I remember her from The Witch, a really good movie.

It's a good story, but it is incredibly well made. I bet they will be using this series as an example of how to make movies in film school.

Things like the framing of the shot when she's playing the young Russian kid. The focus is on the chess board and the frantic moves and the shot just builds the stress until they postpone the game. Then when she comes back, she's composed and relaxed and she whips his ass in a few moves, but the camera no longer shows the chessboard. It focuses entirely on the players. It moved from being a game to being a fight between two people and she knew she could win.

Also, that guy that plays Bennie? He's 30 years old! He looks like a 15 year old kid growing his first peach fuzz! lol
