Thinking About Selling my SCAR 17S... Would You?

This is an excellent rifle, but it does have some annoyances.

1: It's fucking loud as hell. Stupid loud. Imagine loud, and then imagine louder.

2: Not too much kick, but it's sharp recoil; like a hammer. They probably should have damped it instead of worrying about the folding stock.

3: It's not quite as fast and intuitive to clean as it could be.

I can get a decent amount of money for it fairly quickly, but there's another question in the air. Depending on what changes in the nation, it could become impossible to replace, or skyrocket in value this coming year. Hell, it could become impossible to sell. It's a tough decision either way.

I'm better with this than I ever was with an AR pattern, even when I was in the military. It's night and day even with iron sights. I'm kind of stuck with iron sights, though, because I'm not going to buy an optic just for the thing to break it (they break the things constantly because of the strange recoil impulse), and I'm not going to buy a $2,000-$3,000 optic that won't break.

So, I've got a rifle I can finally shoot as well as I should be able to, but it'll only ever have iron sights, and I think it's too loud. I wouldn't want to remove the muzzle brake on that thing, either. Lord knows what the recoil would be like, at that point.

My 8mm Mauser has more recoil, but feels like a pressure washer. It doesn't bother me at all; but the SCAR... I'm not sure if I should be shooting that thing until I get my neck fixed, anyway.

What do you guys think?

I think I've got six mags, and I have a couple of cans of really nice Israeli ammunition to go with it, and it's only got about two mags through it, because I got all fucked up not too long after I bought it and never really bothered; so I figure it'll sell pretty strong, especially since it'll be the only one on a shelf in town.

i always regret selling after the fact. its a double edged sword

Well, I sold it yesterday. I thought I'd miss it more, but we're not yet in a world where I can't replace it without a hassle. I'm not really feeling the hit, thank goodness.

A shop was nice enough to just buy it from me to put on the shelf, along with the Glock 17 I never really liked. Hopefully they'll come out good.

Shame about the FN, but damn it all... What am I supposed to do with that thing, anyway? It's too loud for anything it's actually good at.

I'm thinking if I ever get another, I'll roll with .556. The platform is great, but I don't think it's best served by 7.62, as cool as it is.

I spent too long being concerned about whether or not I'd hate selling it. Dropped off everything I had for it except that Vickers sling I bought, which I really liked. I'm going to put that on something else; maybe the Mauser if it works.

That was the kicker, in the end. A $188 dollar Mauser was more fun to shoot.

Doesn't change the fact that I like the SCAR, I just feel this little air of "1.0" about it; as if FN just wanted to get it in a competition, didn't win whatever contract they really wanted, and then gave up and made a semi-auto to recoup some costs.

Nothing wrong with that, but you've got to be a bit more of a firearm enthusiast than I am to have a Gucci gun like that sitting around doing nothing.

Cheers,

I've kind of wanted the scar 17, I'm glad to hear an assessment by someone who had one. They are probably unobtainable right now anyways but I guess I'll go sig patrol when the time comes to get a hold of a .308!
