Got a video of a potential purchase... How's this sound? I know they are noisy (my buddy has one) but I can't tell. This is a 13 with 45k, build date is 6/2013.

That thing is clean! Sounds exactly like mine, which now has 72+K.

Traditionally the timing chain will make noise on start up and chatters for about 5 seconds or more and then goes away. When my oil gets old and/or its very cold out sub 20F, it'll make a slight chatter for a second to two on startup. From my research, that sounds normal. Anything longer though could mean it needs a new guide.

Thanks gents. It sounds the same as my buddy’s with 66k. This ones a real unicorn, and I’m buying it without actually seeing it in person (COVID BS and my wife is 9 months pregs) so I’ve been a little neurotic about it.

That is definitely not true for the 5.0 in the LR4. The most consistent way to verify timing chain noise on that engine, in my experience, is to get the engine warm, shut it off for about a minute, then restart. The noise is always apparent at idle and when it starts, it does not stop.

Yeah, I was referring to my 4.4 in the LR3. Thanks for clarification.

When they clack loud for a second or two after startup I usually figure one of the tensioners is collapsed. When oil pressure isn't in it the chain is loose. For whatever reason the spring inside the tensioner body isn't pushing out on the guide.

You probably have a V V T hub making noise. The tensioner used to fail on the real early 4.4's but I mean early like before they ran them in the LR3.
Do you have any cam timing faults stored. That might help you figure out what hub is making the noise.

Well, it showed up last night finally. Needs a good cleaning as they drove through some weather on the way up, then I have six cans of fluid film to unload underneath it to keep it cherry. Its amazing how familiar it felt compared to the D1.

polished and sealed. couple rock chips as expected but you really can't ask for more from something that is 7 years old.

Truck has new brakes all around, feels tight as a drum. She's a big girl, but the 5.0 moves out quick. A pair of tires are worn a little on the outside edge, probably will need a set by summer or at least before next winter depending on how much I'm driving the next couple months. Will def be going with a set of Evo Corse 18s.

I have a full 5-wheel set of 19s from the black design package that came on my 2013 LR4 with the black center caps. Also 4 Pirelli Scorpion Verde tires size 255/60/19 with about a thousand miles - they are all date code 2019. The spare had what I assume is the original Continental 4X4 Contact size 255/55/19 with a 2012 date code and it looks like it has zero miles. I have them listed locally but no bites yet.

I'll also soon have the extended roof rails (black) available. I'm waiting for my Prospeed rack and the short rails to arrive in a couple weeks.
