Time for new tires for my series IIA. It is currently wearing 245 /75 - 16's which were there when I bought it. I kind of want the Tall & Skinny look and have been eyeing 235/85-16's. I see that super swamper sells a 34/9 - 16 which is about as tall and skinny as it gets - anyone run a tire this tall on a series vehicle? I have fairly recently installed Ti Console Parablics. Just wondering if a tire this tall will a) fit b) be asking to snap and axle.

Also, where is a good source for new wheels for a series?

cheers,

Ted

my 109 has 235/85-16 on it and it suits the vehicle well imho. this size is basically equal to the OEM size.

as far as wheels, we're using the std wheels which were painted the OEM limestone color.

The "stock tall-n-skinny" size is a 7.5x16, but it's not that common of a size anymore. 235/85R16 is pretty close, and suits a Series well. I've seen 255/85R16 on a Series before, but I think it was a bit much, actually.... if you're on a HD setup, like, a military 109" then maybe that larger size is okay, but I would suggest 235/85R16 or 7.5x16 if you can find a tire that you like in that size.

IMHO, FWIW....

Hey Ted,

I'm thinking about doing the same for my Rover as well. I think that the 9/34-16LT Swampers might fit okay, but there's going to be some rubbing going on. Currently, I run 235/86R16 BFG All-Terrains, and they rub only on the front at full lock. Of course, I haven't adjusted my steering stops since I put them on 6+ years ago. The 9/34 look like they would rub in the rear at full-stuff (nice term) and would hit the edge of the rear bed support too.

I think that the 9/32 TSL or the 235.85R16 Trxus should fit just fine. The Trxus is a bit narrower. I'm not sure that a 255/85R16 Trxus will fit on the stock rim, but I hope so. Then you could use the money that you saved from not having to buy new rims to beef up the rear axle a bit.

Brian -

What suspension set-up do you have on your truck? With the TI Console Parabolics it seemed that I got about a 2" lift over stock. Although in all fairness my stock suspension was 39 years old and probably a little flat :). Just wondering about the rubbing.

cheers,

Hey Ted,

I have the 2 leaf TIs in the front and the 2+1 in the rear. I only got rubbing on the front inner panels at full lock but that's just due to not adjusting the stops. When I ran the 7.50R16 XCLs, I had bookoo turning radius because they were so thin, and I don't recall ever rubbing with those babies. I think that I'm leaning towards the 9/32-16LT TSLs for my truck. If you go to www.stlrovr.com and into the gallery section under the first SAE selection titled "SAE 2003: 14-16Nov2003", there is a pic on page 20 of an 88 pickup with the TSLs on it. Pretty nice.

I use the Courser Traction LT by Mastercraft (Cooper Tires) 7.50 x 16 on my 1960 Series II SWB. They are 7.25 inches wide, stand 32.20 inches tall and have a 8 ply side wall. I get about 45,000 miles out of them (lasts me about 2 years) but they only cost $80.00 a piece, mounted.

You can check them out at this link.
