I'm towing a Mazda 626 down to Atlanta this upcoming Friday from Raleigh.

It's a good 6 hour drive, probably 7 or 8 with this vehicle in tow.

I have a choice between a tow dolly or a double axle trailer for $15 bucks more. What should I go with?

Also, I have the LR trailer wiring kit minus the dongle to connect to the trailer. I've been told the LR genuine part is like a $100 bucks.

What are my options? I've already look at the Tech section and I'm confused by that whole write-up.

Let me know.

I'd go with all four wheels off the ground. Assuming you have the LR converter from your tail light to the bumper, you should be able to go to Napa and get the correct connector from the 7 plug to a flat four or round five, whatever is on the trailer. Have fun.

I would definitely go with the tow dolly. I have used these before and for towing a front wheel drive vehicle they work great and are lightweight. The weight of the tandem axle trailer plus the 626 will be pushing the limits of your Disco.

As far as the dongle - I think I paid $25-$30 for mine new from the dealer. It is the wiring harness that is stupid expensive.

Good Luck.

Is there any reason I couldn't get the setup described in the Disco 2 trailer wiring doc to work for me? Assuming I didn't have any wiring kit. I have a 99 DI.

How to...

Go to http://68.49.91.161/uhaul/index.htm for details. Buy the UHaul kit he recommends, or for a lot less, buy a universal 4 trailer wiring wire kit at your local auto parts store.
Match up the colors as follows :
LR wiring Purpose Cable Kit
Purple.red Brake Brown
Orange/red tail lights Do not connect
green/red Left turn Yellow
Green/white Right turn Green
and attach the ground wire to ground, of course :)

Just did on my 98disco, works perfectly...
good luck
