Drives sortof shakey so I removed front driveshaft thinking that maybe it had been knackered or perhaps in need of new ujoints. Went to drive her in 2 wheel drive and she doesn't move -Just sounds like transfer case gears grinding. Our Disco may have failed in its transfer case and I'm not sure how to think of that. Anyone been here before? I've installed LT's into our other BW Rovers but never had to build one. Thanks.

Right, I should've mentioned that I reviewed all gear knob positions. Futhermore, I just reinstalled her front drive and she does now drive. So back to the LT output gearing?

Transfer case in high is not the same as transfer case locked. Transfer case has 5 positions:
High open
High locked (center diff light illuminates on dash)
Neutral
Low open
Low locked (center diff light illuminates on dash)

If you don't have the amber light lit on your dash, your transfer case is unlocked/open. It's also possible to be "in between" positions, but the truck will let you know quickly.

Unlocked as we've no dash light lite. Locked or unlocked, high or low, thing is that she'll drive if the front drive shaft is installed and wont drive if she's removed. I'm thinking that what I may be looking at is the tcase rear drive gear? Never cracked one open but I've installed 2 in our other Rovers.

Your transfer case is sending all of the power to the front driveshaft when you remove it.
You need to remove the front shaft, put the transfer case in high and move the transfer case shifter to the left into the Locked position so that it puts power equally to the front and rear.

This video may help in the explanation a bit.

Yep. It wont move if either the front or rear shafts are out and you dont lock the diff. The noise you are hearing are the captive bolts spinning around as all the power is being sent to the front output.
