Transmission problem?

A friend of mine made purchased a 95(Possibly a 96) Discov and has ufortunately had nothing but problems with it. The previous owner tore it up fairly bad. Anyways, 6 months and 3 thousand dollars later, it's striking back again. It won't shift out of 2nd gear it seems. Right when it's ready to go into 3rd, then RPMs soar but it won't shift or so. It seems as if it's stuck.

Before taking this to the garage where he gets ripped of big time, is it possible theres any other option than a tranny? Because that's surely what they'll tell him.

I have a similar problem with an '94 auto. It shifts through all gears fine, but will not shift up out of first. If anyone can confirm my only choice is to replace my transmission, it would make me fell better about going down that road :)

thanks

Hi - I was just looking at the landrover manual for '95 and it says to check the line pressure using a pressure guage. If pressure is normal it could be clutch pack A and itf it is high the primary regulator could be stuck. That's just the info I found in the manual - does not mean it's the probelm of course. If you do (or did) go down the transmission replacement route let me know how it goes and where you got the transmission and the work done. I may be facing a similar situation. I have no gears at all!
