Transmission ?

Bear with me, I am a D1 owner and don't know too much about RRs. I have a friend with an early to mid 90's RR SWB, auto transmission. To make a long story short, he has had a lot of trouble with the transmission over the last couple months. He took it to a local shop (that does not specialize in Rovers) and they told him he needed a "new front seal of the transmission" and it would cost $1,600. Is a reasonable price? Should he just get the transmission rebuilt? Buy a used one? Any suggestions would be great.

On my 97 RR, it cost me $3,000 to get the transmission rebuilt. Hopefully it's less on the classics. The $1600 sounds pretty reasonable compared to that. The problem is that if you just get the front seal replaced, more problems might arise with the ******, or the problem might not be completely solved.

it's the same ZF transmission used in BMW and Jag~

model 4H22 I think, a rebuilt one shouldn't be too hard to find~ check ebay, currently there is a used on for sale.

good luck

The front seal going bad seems to be fairly common on the older RR Classics. The seal itself is a five dollar part and takes five minutes to install...once you have the transmission out. The labor is the big issue so check around you might find a better price.

If you are not going to be doing the seal replacement then maybe you ought to consider rebuilding the ****** while it is out. $1600 seems way to much for seal replacement. A general mechanic shop should be able to do the repair for cheaper. You could probably buy the part at Autozone for less than $10.00
