Trying to decide what to let go

I have 4 D1s and really need to thin the herd.

I have a gold 98 LSE in very nice condition that I converted to 300tdi with 5 speed. That one is definitely a keeper.

I also have a red 96 SD automatic that has been the focus of my current efforts. It runs and drives quite well and only has a few minor remaining issues to address. it lived its life in northern CA until I brought it to New Mexico. There is some rust under the alpine window seals. I took out the glass and put rust converter on the rust spots. The body only has minor nicks and dings but the paint is showing it’s age and I would like to get it repainted at some point. It had next to no interior in it when I picked it up. I have pieced together a pretty nice interior for it. I still need a few odds and ends to wrap it up. I have considered selling it when I clear up the remaining issues. However, I really like it and it is an automatic, meaning my wife can drive it.

I have another gold 98 LSE with a good running 4.6. (4.0 built up to 4.6) with an automatic. When I bought it I didnt really have a plan for it. It came with a spare engine, 5 speed, and transfer case removed from a 97 model with only 27,000 miles, which was what I really wanted, but the deal was I had to take the D1 with it. It came with a lot of new parts as well. It was like I paid for the parts and got the D1 for free, almost. I need to look into why it shifts hard and late. I believe it is the kick down cable needing adjustment. So, assume the auto trans is ok. It is remarkably rust free. Only rust is surface rust under the driver side carpet. The dash and heater defrost duct is trashed. It needs to come out and be replaced. It also has death wobble pretty bad. As soon as I got it I went for a drive and it scared the hell out of me. It has only moved in and out of the shop since then. It will need to be painted but otherwise the body is pretty good.

The 4th one is a green 96 SD 5-speed with 55,000 miles. The interior is absolutely mint, way better than you would expect for even 55,000 miles. It came with a locked up engine that I replaced with an engine that only has 27,000 miles. It runs and shifts very well. However, unlike the previous 3, it has some major rust. I don’t think it has even a little ding or scratch on the body but the paint is weathered. The passenger side inner fender needs to be replaced as It has holes you can fit a softball through. All but one body mount is heavily rotted. The frame has heavy “surface” rust that the previous owner covered with rust converter. There is a lot of surface rust underneath that I suspect has some pretty thin areas. Brake lines are rusted terribly and all need to be replaced. If you bump up against anything underneath it rains rust on you. I thoroughly hate working on cars that are this rusty. Almost every bolt I have removed underneath has broken in the process or required me cutting it off. It was extremely difficult to get the rear bumper off.

My thinking today is to use the rusty green 96 SD as a parts donor for the gold 98 LSE. It has a great interior and the 98 LSE needs one. The drivetrain in the 98 is good but the 96 SD is better and it is 5 speed. I might even use the 96 roof to eliminate the sunroofs on the 98, which do not work and are sealed closed sloppily by a previous owner. I’m not a body guy and would have to have that work $$$$ done by a shop. Maybe I would just replace/repair the sunroofs. I feel kinda bad making the 96 SD a parts donor, The rust is bad but I have seen other ones on this forum in worse shape that were repaired. One surprising area it is not rusty is the cargo area floor.

I expect I will give the red 96 SD automatic to my son at some point. That would leave me 2 for myself if I make the 96 green SD a parts donor.

What do you guys think about merging the 98 LSE with the 96 SD, making the 96 SD the donor vehicle?

First of all...you, sir, have a problem.

(1) Gold 98 LSE 300 Tdi 5-speed in nice condition. Keeper.

(2) Red 96 SD needs paint and has pieced together interior. Get it to the point of salability and cut your losses.

(3) Another Gold 98 LSE 4.6 V8 Auto, with low-mileage spare engine (assuming 4.0), 5-speed transmission, transfer case, misc. other new parts, shifts hard & late, most likely easily repairable, needs dash-out duct work, death wobble.

(4) Green 96 SD 5-speed, 55k miles, already replaced engine with 27k mile engine, minty-fresh interior, sounds like a dream until I read further and got to the rust. Salvage everything you can off of this one, throw the parts at your other 3 and throw the rest away.

By my reckoning, you will end up with #1 your nice gold 98 LSE 300 Tdi, then one truck in the trash (#4 green 96), then #2 red 96 that gets everything it needs form the trashed green 96, then #3 the other gold 98 LSE that gets everything it needs (hopefully) from the trashed green 96.

And you end up with the spare second gold 98 engine, the spare 5-speed trans from gold 98, salvaged 27k engine from green 96, salvaged 5-speed from green 96, salvaged minty-fresh interior from green 96, and whatever other misc. parts are leftover.

Congratulations sir, you are now officially a Land Rover hoarder.

So that ‘96 with perfect interior. The dash isn’t curling? The interior alone is a big deal. You get trucks from up north and they’re all rotted but the sun hadn’t burnt up the interior yet. You need two trucks to make a good one most of the time.
If it was mine I would strip the interior out of the rusted out truck and get it stored away in a climate controlled space and start looking for an Arizona truck with little rust but baked interior.

This is pretty much my line of thought as well. I will likely strip the 96 interior and install it directly in the gold 98. Im just dreading swapping the dash more than anything, The gold 98 is from Texas and is almost completely rust free but has the baked and in just about every other way trashed interior. It looks like someone beat the radio console and heater duct with a hammer and tried to repair it all with black silicone. It is a real shit show.

The other gold 98 I put the 300tdi in was from Arizona. I’m guessing it was garaged as the interior was/is in very good shape. It was the first one I owned. I didn’t realize then what a gem it was having absolutely no rust and a nice interior. It had a rod through the side of the block… perfect for the diesel conversion. When I got interested in D1s I lived in St. Louis where they put more salt on the roads than you can find in the ocean, As such, they were very rare by 2010 when I decided to buy one.

The green one with the excellent interior is from Kentucky and has the rust issues. The passenger side is much worse than the driver side for some reason. I think merging them along the lines you suggest is where I am going with it. I just wish the 98 didn’t have sunroofs. It doesn’t look like it would be too demanding a job to use a carefully cut a skin section from the 96 to eliminate the sunroofs. Oh, to answer your question about the 96 dash, it has no curl and it is stored inside my shop to assure the inteior stays nice. It is not climate controlled but it never gets very hot here when out of the sun’s reach. A really hot day (rarely) here is in the mid 80s, typically in June. Most warm days are in the 70s. However, the sun is really intense. Dash covers or those reflective sun shades are a must for the D1s to preserve the dash. By the way, those SG bumpers I got from you are currently living on the green one. They will be put to good use.

On the preference for manual trans, there is almost no stop and go driving here…. 2 lane mountain highways 95% of the time. My regular travels take me down a 2 lane mountain highway where I lose about 5000 feet of elevation over 16 miles. I really like to engine brake and the manual trans does a better job than the auto. The momentum gain is often more than the auto trans handles well. Overall, I just feel like I am in more control with a manual trans. My wife says I have a hard time giving up control… (don’t read into that), maybe this is a symptom. I guess the “control freak” would be the one least aware of that condition.

The 4 all sound like potential runners. The parts you got with the '98 LSE are currently superfluous. Clearly you need more Rovers.
That is the problem. They are all potential runners. I have other hobby vehicles as well. My goal is to reduce stock by one Land Rover and one Triumph.
