Twitter Vs. Facebook.

this is a post more geared towards the younger guys, so if you don't appreciate social networking or the differences between the top two networking sites out there, i'd just ignore this post. if you do, then read on. :patriot:

who on here has a twitter? I use it for everything from humor, to keeping up with my friends (who i actually want to hear from, not everyone i've ever met like facebook does), to the latest news from CNN and the like, to sports.

i'm becoming more and more fed up with facebook, through all the changes, the amount of information of myself that has accumulated over the years (tagged photos, wall posts, etc... which i try to keep as private as is possible on such a site) and the constant bullshit from all the people i don't care about who i haven't seen in years) is starting to get extremely annoying. The site is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate or to delete people you don't want to hear from anymore. There is also a lot of useless information. who really looks up someones interests in music or movies on their facebook? what's the point? to make yourself seem deep? also, as i get older the amount of creepy people, peoples posting pictures of their kids all the time (that's great but it's weird to post your profile picture as just a picture of your baby...just sayin) and the general useless information that you continually have to sift through, such as so and so are now friends. that and all the ads that show up all the time. (speaking of ads, fuck 30 second online videos that has a 30 second ad in front it. i.e. youtube these days.)

twitter seems to be a REAL way of social networking and actually being able to communicate with everyone from your best friend to a famous comedian or actor. I've found new businesses that i love and enjoy their updates on new products or photos, or slash them when they get annoying. Generally people only post something that is actually interesting or relevant to you, although there is still the occasional chick who does nothing but put up "inspirational" quotes.

THE biggest benefit is the follow/follower deal. you don't have to "Accept" and "Become friends" with someone. they can follow you and you never ever have to see their updates unless you choose to "follow" them as well. you can make it public for all to see, or private and on lock, and no one is ever the wiser if you don't accept their request (none of that "request sent" or "waiting for response" shit like facebook.)

I use it for the most breaking news, which is updated and linked to the actual newsite quite often, and i love how short everything must be kept. every update is 140 characters or less, including punctuation and links. You don't see other people's responses to a tweet unless you search it out, and you don't have an update of friends or random people writing on other friends "walls" all day long.

It keeps things simple and to the point, and skips all the bullshit. the way you wish most everything in your life could be managed. easy to navigate and nothing frivolous.

is anyone else with me?

Also, if you actually do have a twitter, what are some of your favorite people to follow ?

mine:
@MensHumor hilarious jokes or perceptive insights geared towards men (especially singles)
@colinkane Vulgar comic, but damn is he hilarious if you appreciate those kind of jokes.
@funnyordie viral videos, photos, or self-produced skits. hilarious.
@warblogle best Auburn football blog out there
@CNN breaking news updated as the stories break
@GQ style, entertainment, interviews, women, and movies.
@OMGfacts don't hate the name. there are some really interesting facts posted daily that are great small talk topics (you never know)
@woodanfaulk DIY leather and goods maker. makes brilliant designs out of his garage and posts tutorials on how to make them as well.

and last but not least @twinkietim our resident asain on DWEB. Tim whitaker.:ack: :D

I agree with almost everything you've said here. At one point I even deleted my FB account for about a month and forced myself to use twitter. The one and only reason I go back to FB is the photos. I know twitter has a photo service now that didn't exist when I did the self imposed ban, but I like the photo sharing format better on FB.

The big thing holding me back from making the switch permanently is really the lack of friends I have that tweet. FB is easy, even for the non tech savvy, but for some reason it seems like only my tech savvy friends are on twitter. I would lose some family connections if I switched over because nobody in my family tweets, but everyone and their dog is on FB.

All that said, this thread has inspired me to start using my twitter account again. And I'll be following Timmy this time...

Not to bag on the FB/Twitter crowd (I don't use either), but the word 'Tweet' sounds like something a crack whore would do in a back alley for $5. Just saying.

I twitter to follow sports, especially recruiting. I'm no expert but it seems that the argument you make for twitter was the argument made for facebook before it took over myspace.

however, I don't like how much emphasis is put on facebook in the job market. I had a woman look at my facebook account while on an interview. She literally had me sign into my facebook account and then perused around like she was me. She didn't go into messages or anything, but she did look at my pictures which are locked even to my friends. In retrospect I probably could have filed a lawsuit, I just didn't have proof I didn't get the job because of things she "saw"

none of your fucking business
I have a twitter account (same handle as dweb; @LRflip) and use it for getting out a few frustrations, following comedians, tfln, and a few companies: CH2MHill, Cummins, etc...

I too am getting fed up with facebook. but, it's hard to beat their photo sharing.

This thread has just inspired me to spend 30 minutes deleting "friends".

(pat on back) i was a facebook member long before any of my friends had heard of it, but like others, i deleted it because not only do i not want to know what some nerd from HS had for lunch, i dont want my extended family seeing what i'm to in my night life. and not just myself, but my friends. i find it scary that it basically tracks everyone, everything, and everywhere we go, much like google. i had to cut the chord. its the CIA.

Werd? They got crack whores and back alleys in your galaxy too? :bigok:

Yup. The drug is called stardust, though. The professional females are all trained in our many temples, and many of them populate the inner voids between worlds, seeking the darkest of alleys, and providing services for the less enlightened in an altered state of consciousness.

All in all, our crack-whores are of higher quality and performance than those in this galaxy, but they can still give a quick service in exchange for no more currency than the average male can manifest from his guardian account.

Cheers,

Kennith

 That's it, once I conduct some PMCS on my spaceship ("Kremlin Actual") and fill it up with some high grade Eastern Block fuel - of clear variety, I shall promptly depart for your galaxy. I will of course need you to provide me with a 27 digit grid, so I can plug it into my on-board navigational device ("CommradeNavigator1") and get there in no time.
The local "professionally trained" female specimen here is of mediocre quality and can be compared to inter-galactic school in summertime - no class...

i use Facebook for more personal stuff. talking to my idiot friends about drinking stories and catching up with my family. I also use it to create event pages for our club, and of course our club page.

Twitter i use more for my professional SM. same with my website, linkedin and the many other SM sites I belong too.

@etatton is my twitter handle, mostly technology, social media and higher-ed tweets.

I have never been able to get in to facebook, although quite a few of my peers are very involved in it.

What I cannot stand about facebook is the post from someone saying how much they love their spouse or thanking their spouse for something they just did, like making dinner. Shut the fuck up, I don't care.

Im convinced the people who like facebook the most are those who are a little reserved in person and want to brag about themselves.

The issue I have with twitter is that you have to open an app, and scroll through just to get caught back up and I don't find myself doing that frequently. Instead I find myself going through two weeks of tweets in 15 mins, 90% of them are news articles and I've already read the story elsewhere.

Nothing will replace reading the wall street journal in the morning and hanging out with your friends at night.
