Under-carpet padding replacement--what have you used?

Hi all,

I need to get rid of the disintegrating stock carpet underlay foam/rubbery stuff that soaks up water and never dries BUT I love the sound deadening. Wondering if you've found any decent replacements? I'm thinking some combination of vinyl and closed cell foam. Criteria:
  • as close to stock sound deadening as possible; this truck sees the highway
  • won't absorb water
  • not glued down (I get too nervous about rust hiding underneath, and I also have some future projects that need full access to the pan)
What have you used? Or should I just put rubber mats down and invest in earplugs?

Cheers,

Fortunately I haven't yet had to deal with that problem, but other Disco owners in town have had good results with Dynamat.

Doesn't jute soak up water like crazy? Good to know, though, just not sure the Disco's the best environment for it :)

This stuff looks interesting: LifeProof carpet cushion
^^^
EDIT to retract that rec; didn't notice it's only sold by the huge $$$ roll

I think that McMaster product might be better than sticking the other stuff to the floor. I'm not really sure to be honest. But my gut tells me the sticky shit is going to act like duckTape and make the car rot. Like when people fix the glass liftgate with plastic and tape. That rusts thru in months, not years.

Don’t stick anything to the floor. Anything worth a shit a deadening some sound and insulating will soak water. Just hang it out to dry if it gets wet.

Had the wet floor issue with the Rangie due to the front mud flap attachment through the floor. Just took out the sponge, removed the flaps, sealed the holes, and used POR to prevent any rust.

Haven’t thought about this in the D1. Is the front wet floor a common problem with them??

yes, it is a big problem

Im in mostly rust free Texas and just got done replacing and patching floors on my 95. now I have dunked it a couple times and its had leaking sunroofs most of its life so its much worse than any of the others Ive owned. raptor lined it to hopefully last until Im dead so I wont have to do this again

I've tried carpet free and insulation free and its like driving a drum.

Ok, thanks. Mine is a SD so no sunroofs and no wading at least since I’ve owned it.
Guess its time to take a look see!

decision time.

The original foam from the rear is around .835 thick. I'm getting a density of 20lb per cubic ft, so around 1.4 lb/ft^2

so I think I'll be going with this:
https://www.mcmaster.com/85175K35/ and topping it with 1lb MLV.

I don't have a piece of the front to sample, but since I don't want to tear everything out again I'm going overkill
I ordered this. Its arrival and success is key to reinstalling the HVAC and dashboard.

the foam is easy to manipulate. the 1/4" MLV not so much. probably should have gone with the 1/8"

How do you like the soundproofing results? What quantities and dimensions did you order of the products or what do you recommend ordering? what about weight? do you think its lighter than the stock product, or heavier?
