Don't know what the deal is but my water pumps keep failing. First one was some cheap Napa pump the other two were Airtex from Atlantic British. About every 6K miles the pumps start leaking out of the weep hole. After the pump #2 I changed the fan clutch and a fan, flushed the coolant really well. Any suggestions? I am tired of spending money on coolant. Changing a water pump every oil change is ridiculous.

I had a Meyle one last about 6 months a few years ago, but my worn clutch was the problem. Replaced with an allmakes and all has been good for 3+ years.

I would never pay for Genuine but I'm cheap.

What fan clutch did you use?

Have the dealership install a land rover genuine one. Then if it fails you won't have to pay for anything or do any work.

Yeah so they can break it off in him, and come up and say hey this is what's causing your water pump to fail it is this and that etc etc here is the estimate seen it before. I believe that there is too much tension on the pump. Needs to find a reputable LR tech to diagnose the problem.

Exactly why i no longer sell the NAPA fan clutches.

Had a client's water pump fail, the dealer blamed it on the fan clutch. Guess who was the bad guy?

Yep , exactly..I will not put shit on my Land rover or anyone else's..
I get tired of cheap ass fixes and even had told a couple of people who frequent my shop . If you can't afford the right parts,, maybe you ought to sell it and buy a Ford Fiesta..
I guess I'm getting old and cranky .

Maybe it is my fan clutch. The belt is doesn't feel too tight, the fan clutch is Hyden and is pretty tight. Maybe I'll install one of those Ford fans this time, it will probably keep the truck cooler on really hot days.

I don't know what the real issue is with the water pumps in your truck, but my question was geared towards the opposite: the stiffer is the fan clutch, and the heavier/bigger the fan, the shorter will be the life of the water pump bearings.

Nothing I tried so far beats genuine LR fan clutch and stock fan and schroud.

Where do you think these "reputable Land Rover techs" got started? I would bet the majority of them started working at a dealer.

I'm not saying that dealerships are the best option for everyone, but to me it sounds like he has a shitty aftermarket part. We have the same problem with some genuine parts too. My suggestion to take it to the dealer was mainly to save him the trouble of havin to replace it over and over if it fails again.

I agree, but when you go to the dealer it is not going to be just the "water pump", they are going to tell him that this is what's causing your problem and it will have nothing to do with the so called bad part. I have been through it before when I was naive LR owner back in 97 thinking that the dealer was the only place in the world to take it to be serviced, After owning 5 LR Discos DI and two D2's you find out that these trucks are not Jags,Bentley's or a Rolls. So your argument does not make any sense. The reason many LR techs have left is because they can make more money as an independent tech without screwing the customer and they are still able to make a profit..

I had a hayden clutch for a while on my Defender that motherfucker wouldnt let go! It might be good for a hot trail day crawling otherwise its junk, this was a vbelt part#. I put the GM clutch on a serp truck with no issue but I also put a genuine water pump on it. I have a buddybrand from Rovers North on my Classic and some cheap POS on my Defender a shop put on it years ago. Two things worth buying genuine are water pumps and stepper motors, the other parts are what Will sends.

I don't see how the fan clutch would cause water pump failure unless the idea is that it's too heavy or out of balance. Considering Hayden and Imperial are an extremely common replacement clutch, I'm doubtful.
I do get why dealers would blame it on an aftermarket clutch though.

FWIW, I've had an Imperial Super Duty clutch and Imperial metal fan on my genuine pump since 2007 without any issues.
