found out the new posche (g30) and the new VW stuff is all G12++ (plus plus). Pink.

G012A8G1G lists at $23/gal at VW. So I would imagine it can be had for 15 or so, about what Havoline Dexcool goes for at vatozone.

Ended up using Dex-Cool. I know that's what was in there before and it's what the dealer recommended.

bad move

I got rid of my dex and went with the euro stuff, there is pentofrost, and there is the plus. I do the non plus

Why? I called the dealer and that's what they recommended.

Because people are still under the impression the DexCool causes gasket failure.

And it does, if you believe the claims (which they now no longer make) that it is "lifetime" coolant. Dex goes acidic more quickly than normal in the presence of air, which is pretty common in these cooling systems. But all coolant eventually go acidic. Obviously you want to change it before it goes too acidic because it will eat the head gaskets as well as everything else it touches.

There is s really simple way to know when to change your your coolant: test strips. They have both freeze temp as well as pH on them.

Arguing over coolants in a motor where you can literally use anything that is aluminum safe is pretty much useless. Just test your coolant, or change it way earlier than you would need to (annually, maybe every 2 years) and you'll be fine.

I replaced factory fill with factory fill
http://pentosin.net/pressreleases/CRP-116_Pentofrost_SF_2.pdf
shows why your disco had pink in from the factory

http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=427
is how you put pink back in

us dealers are morons, (as are most US Land rover buyers and shops when it comes to knowing what pink straight G12 is)

no one said europeoan car ownership is cheap

I have a fleet in my garage that I maintain meticulously and buck the trend with being problem free

ymmv

use the right shit please, but please dont pretend orange(dexfool) or purple(++) are the correct colors, its made to be moron proof, but still pink is what was factory, dont kid herself

oh, and yes, you're welcome

dexcool when contaminated will gel
I read G12 does the same thing when mixed or contaminated with other coolants.

Also from the repair manual:
Use Havoline Extended Life Coolant (XLC), or any
ethylene glycol based anti-freeze (containing no
methanol) with only Organic Acid Technology (OAT)
corrosion inhibitors, to protect the cooling system

Use carboxylate formula/organic acid technology (OAT) based coolant. This is an extended
life ethylene glycol based coolant containing no phosphates, silicates, borates, nitrates,
amines or methanol. Use one part anti-freeze to one part water for protection down to -33°
F (-36° C).

my theory, and i cant say I have proven it yet as I have about 90k of hard driven miles, but i suspect the wrong coolant may accelerate head gasket life, just my theory but I am far from a mechanic

That's exactly the kind of "opinion" that adds to all of the old wives tales floating around about coolants.

Coolant is coolant. In an ancient aluminum motor with composite gaskets all that matters is having the proper heat and lubrication properties, not being mixed with a bunch of minerals that will deposit and insulate or clog the cooling system and changing it before it reaches a pH that will eat away at what it touches.

Hint: no coolant is lifetime. Dex was sued over this claim.

Use the damn test strips and do you maintenance. It's not hard, it's not guessing, it's not assuming. It's high school level science class.

Want to argue over which one lasts longer? Go for it. But I sure as hell don't care. They are all good enough to last a couple of years and that's plenty enough for me to feel like I got my money out of them.

Motul makes a 'pink' organic long life coolant, but our supplier can not get it yet. personally i use the redline, and we use Motul at the shop.

Like others have posted, use the right fluids and change them often.

X2.

i think this may be a reason manufacturers are switching to the 'rusty' looking Dot5 brake fluid...it forces you to use test strips with the brake fluid instead of just looking at it and thinking it's okay.
