Gents,

95 Disco. 5 speed, 300 tai. Chasing this noise for a while. It is presenting like a wheel bearing but I've replaced them and the noise is unchanged. Changing diff fluid today to see if I can get at least a different pitch.

The noise: Scraping sound that gets worse with speed and left turn. Took it to a good friend that owns a shop- he said it sounded like the noise was coming from everywhere in the driveline. Pinion bearing?

Best guess wins a hat. Not a specific hat....just one of the ones I don't wear anymore.

Best,
buck

Can you take it to your friend's shop and drive it on the lift? That's usually the easiest way to find a noise in the driveline short of using chassis ears. Assuming you can hear it on the lift, you could unbolt the drive shafts one at a time, or even both of them to isolate if the noise is front, rear, or center.

No evidence of rubbing anywhere on the disc but I will look at the brake backing....

Apparently he put it on the lift and couldn't find it. He's thinking pinion bearing but said it was a guess.

Possible, just a thought but have you checked oil level in transfer box and diffs?
One of ours ($700 Craigslist special) had been making a slightly odd road speed related noise for 50 K miles and a couple of years (which was ignored).
Never checked transfer box oil which was a mistake.
Daughter had it towed home after it "made a weird noise and suddenly overheated"
Transfer box drain plug was covered in metal 'fur' and gears looked like attached picture intermediate shaft had been so hot that the casing started to melt!
Elder son just swapped out transfer box for me as I was away.

That's why I'm recommending removal of the drive shafts, if you remove the front driveshaft and the noise goes away, it would be from the front axle... This will give you a little more direction in your diagnosis.
