Won't Start

So my rusted and wrecked 96 Disco has been sitting for a long time. I used to run it once in a while but I have not recently. I went out to start it and the battery was dead. I took the battery out and put it on a charger. I put it back in and it started but was running rough. I decided to open the air filter box while running for some stupid reason to check the filter and it sputtered and died. The battery died again so I used a different one. Now it won't start. It cranks but will not fire. The engine was rebuilt a couple of years ago and only has a few thousand miles on it.

I am planning on pulling the rebuilt engine out of it and scrapping the vehicle after I pull all the parts I want on it. They will go into a 99 SD. it's almost like it knew it was going to the scrapper this winter. I have no idea where to start... Is this some anti theft issue or a sensor, MAF, what to try next?

Use your OBD2 reader for diagnosis.
Partially charged batteries can camoflage all kinds of other issues, so make sure it's fully charged.
But your going to pull the engine anyway. If you're going to reuse sensors. coils, etc., the OBD2 reader will tell you which ones you "could" reuse and which to junk.

The torque app showed me no real issues, but it is pretty basic. I decided to check the test port on the fuel rail and nothing came out. Does seems like a fuel issue.

It was running rough for a little while before it died. I picked up a salvage yard test fuel pump for a few dollars. if that does not do it ill move on to the others.

When they sit with E10 (or worse) in the tank, moisture contaminates the fuel and can rust out the fuel pump.

The Torque App, eh? Come on. Do you need one of us to send you a decent OBD2 reader for Christmas? Okay, forget that.

Better yet, tell your wife you need one for Christmas. It's the near perfect man cave gift, except it contains no alchohol.

I mostly use the torque app while driving to monitor things that the gauges are useless for. When I had the P38s and the DI, there were no real good readers that covered both for a reasonable amount of money. Now I am down to the DI only, what is a better reader to use that has some advanced functionality to it?

For OBD2 I use a ScanGauge II.

On my RRC I use RoverGauge on a tablet, but I’m about to get a complete Blackbox Solutions kit to cover every system.
Is the scangauge really that much different than torque? Other than calculating mileage which I really don't care about. It does not go into any of the disjointed subsystems does it? No ABS, SRS, etc.? This could be yet another break out topic.

Back on the original topic... I checked a few voltages and fuses and then got bored looking for everything. I decided to get ready to put the fuel pump in. When it was all open I remembered I had not listened for the pump to kick on. That was because it was not. That still could be electrical or mechanical, so i plugged in my test pump and it fired right up. So on with the replacement. Got things swapped over, primed it a few times and the engine started. It ran rough for a little bit, so I primed it a few more times and started again right away. Gave it the beans and it was running great again.

Fuel pump assembly for the win and my gas gauge works again too.

A complete blackbox solution? Well, don't leave us hanging....

If I remember correctly is was their MSV-2 plus software codes for Lucas Hotwire 14cux, EAS, Wabco/SRS and all necessary serial cables. I've been putting this purchase off, but the LWB has grown on me and I really can't see ever getting rid of it. So...
