I've been in the high performance and car audio industry for years, and have never seen an Optima do that! Holy crap what a bad deal! I guess anyone can make a bad product once in a while, but what a way to find it!

I deep cycyle those Optima batteries pretty regularly and never had probs with them. the one in my Mustang was about 6 years old and had gone through 9 race cars and 2 competition audio cars before it just quit holding a full charge.

However, I don't run them i my daily drivers for one big fact... They need to be deep cycyled to retain their quality. Meaning, you have to run these things down hard once in a while to keep them good, and you just don't do that with average driving.

i have Napa Spirals and Advance Auto Parts (made by Johnson Controls) batteries. my money is on the Johnson Control batteries at AAP for $75 and 800 CCA. great warranties too if you need them. i still have one Optima as they keep giving me new ones. they just don't take the long discharges like the other batteries.

I have never had a problem with Optima. I have one in my rx7 which has been in two cars now and is great. I also have a red top in my d1 and so far so good.

A few times on long hot drives through the Mojave I have had one of my Optimas "off gas". anyone who has worked around batteries knows the smell. At least I assume it was an off gas. The Optimas have a disc that I am guessing is a kind of purge valve in the event of gas build up. Am I screwed up or is that what I was smelling? I know what I smell like and it wasn't me.

You running dual batteries in any of your trucks?

nope. i don't have many gizmos on my trucks. just a winch and lights i never use. so no need for one. a good battery is plenty for a truck with just a winch. but it sure is nice to have a spare in place when one does fail. like when my Optima shit the bed a few years ago at MAR and Jeff pulled his spare out to let me borrow.

Haven't heard about any blowing up - but I have heard about a few quality issues with the negative terminal on them coming loose or braking off altogether. Not going to be buying any optimas for mine - It's either going to be the oddysey's or the Exide Orbitals.

In the picture they look a bit like blue tops to me -

Dan will enjoy this- that's my 04. One of the Optimas was having a problem keeping a charge, but had not given any indication of reversing a cell or anything potentially dangerous other than being kinda weak. The corner of the battery that came apart and appears by all opinions so far to be the cause is under the negative terminal of the aux battery. Truck sat 18 hours since the last time it was driven- lit up Sunday morning on its own.
