I know there is a map available on the internet that supposedly shows a route from California to Washington through Eastern Oregon all on non-paved roads. I am planning a trip for this summer and need more details than that. I would like to go out of Portland, through Bend, LaPine and out past Ft. Rock, but that is where my previous experience ends. After that I would like to go through Paisly past Summer Lake, and from what I have heard you can drive cross country in a lot of the area down there as it is mostly dry lake beds (Alvroid Desert?) Then I would head north to Burns and back through John Day or there abouts, and that is where I have been several times. But between Ft. Rock and Burns I need info.

I don't want to stick to the roads, I would like to use cross country, or back roads as much as possible. Where are the routes? Gas stations? Private, BLM, N. Forest property? etc... Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a great trip. Buying a topo of the states would be a good start. For Washington nad27.com is a good site w/ topo info.

Take a look at these. The Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route was finished a few years ago. I've been itching to take some time off and see it. There was supposed to be a Pacific Coast Rover Club outing on several sections recently so some of them might have information. Their link is below too.

R.B.

If you go to www.landroveroregon.com you can down load maps of that trail in pdf format. I have them on disk and had thought about taking that trip. It starts in Walla Walla.

Yes, but I have 56k, not a very good use of my internet time...

I am already very excited for this trip, as far as I can tell I will be on the route for about 300 miles or more between Paisley and John Day. At this point the main thing I need is OME suspenssion - mine is sagging and squeaky; and a good GPS - mine is from 1997, with a moving map, but it's not very reliable or useful unless you want to stand in one place for a long time.
