I finally got to go out to Tillamook on Friday. I was not intending to do anything that might get me stuck since we only had one truck and no winch. I was glad to see that all the trails were marked, and that the map they provide was pretty accurate.

I started on the West side, at Jordan Creek, next time I will come from Portland and start on the East side, as it seems that there are more 4x4 trails there.

We drove up to about 3500 feet and being able to see Mt. Jefferson, the Three Sisters and even Bachelor on a late November day! We then drove down trail #41 (Firefox). Initially, it was just a steep straight narrow trail that went through some trees, then at the bottom there was a mud hole. About 20 feet long and up to 2 feet deep, got the truck really dirty. After that it begins a decent that can be steep, and difficult to remain in control on if you don't have off-road tires - as I found out. While careful planning and spotting meant that I did not bottom out on the 2 foot deep ruts and, hair pin turns with 2 foot drops. Nothing short of actual off-road tires could really prevent my truck from slipping sideways - while at a stop - and slamming into a 3 foot vertical wall of dirt that was the inside edge of one of these turns. The damage would, happily, only be noticeable to someone who was very familiar with the rear quarter of a Discovery.

I would love to hear from some of you about the other trails in the area so that I don't waist my time driving around next time I go up there. I will probably take the IIa, so fuel is a precious commodity. You can only carry so many extra cans.

Check out my web site some time this week for the photos of this trail.

Tillamook, wow! Got in-laws in Hillsoboro/Portland and have been to eat some cheese over in Hillsboro a couple of times.. love some Tillamook cheddar by the way.. and never even thought of OHV trails when I'm out there as I'm usually cruising in a rental Lincoln or the in-laws Toyota Avalon.. I'll have to rent a j#$p or something next year.. Roberto

There are enough Rover drivers around that if you got on this web site before you came you could get hooked up with a few guys with real trucks while you are here!

Check out the PCRC web site, it is a big club that uses the Tillamook forest a lot. This is my site:
