I'm planning on taking the family out to Hole in the Rock, UT in April. My question, can this trial be done in a Dodge Durango? I've heard the first part of it is graded dirt road but the final 7 or so miles is "rough."

How about members of my party hiking while I stuff their junk into my Rover to complete the Rough section to get a good campsite?

Appreciate any insight into this.

Thanks, Emilio

there are two distinct sections of the hole in the rock trail. are you comming from escalante traveling east and running into the western shore of lake powel? or are you starting on the eastern side of the state and stopping on the eastern shore of lake powell?

if you are taking the (escalante) west to east version, it is simply a washboard road for 40 miles, i stopped before it got to be any sort of 4 wheeling (about 37 miles into it). i hiked into the wilderness for a few days. (try spooky gulch for slot canyons, check with escalante BLM office in town for more info.)

i can't comment about the last "mile or so" of the trail but i heard it is easy.

the other side of the trail is defenitly demanding and there is no way i'd take a stock durango on it.

There is a map of the route at:
http://www.nps.gov/glca/hitr.htm

Some pix of the west bound trip from Bluff at:
http://www.4x4now.com/hole.htm

I did this in a COMPLETELY stock '95 D1 in 1997. The only mod that had been done was removal of the front air dam, I still had 225 tires too. I used the trailer hitch quite a bit coming off obstacles and for my first off-road adventure it was a rush. I did the trip with Bill Burke so his experience was EXTREMELY beneficial for me in my vehicle. Likely a Durango could make it but there is quite a departure issue on them and I believe that there is plastic on the front that you might lose-- iffy. Would also likely depend on your skill level and ability to go around. Certainly getting into the chutes and the chutes have no go arounds. I'd probably choose not to take a Durango on it.

Thanks very much for the information. Do I understand this correctly that there's really two trails? One that ends up at hole in the rock and one that ends up at the eastern shore of Powell or are these two "trails" just part of the same trail?

Sounds to me that the trip from Escalante to Hole in the Rock ought to be ok for a Durango but from Bluff to Hole in the Rock is real 4 wheeler country only...

Thanks, again,

Emilio

For what its worth, I got a mobile phone signal at the end of the trail, not sure why, but its always nice to know just in case.

And the danger in that trail comes not so much from the technical difficulty, its actually fairly easy, but more in its remoteness and length. If you tread on a snake out there, you better have a cell phone and GPS handy!

For a long day of slot canyoneering do Peek-a-boo, Spooky, and Brimstone. Otherwise split it up into two days. Also I think Hole in the Rock is at least 50 miles from where you leave the pavement just east of Escalante.
