I'm looking to put together a trip for this weekend, hopefully taking advantage of the day off I have on Monday. Camping/wheeling/hiking are my expected activities. I wouldn't mind a bit of backpacking, but that's not usually this group's forte. Scheduling and destinations are up for debate--I just want to get out into the woods for a couple of days to play in the snow and cold.

It is too cold to camp and hike up there. We have 0 degree bags and a sweet tent but it's just too cold. Trails are ok up there but very easy. Dictum in snow, very hard. Kephart dead-ends. Second Mt is open. Enoch, Eric, Mike, and I go all the time if we are bored.

I wouldn't say that it is too cold to camp.. I'd go but, I already got plans this weekend.

I was on these trails last weekend and it was a good time. The only thing I would watch out for are ice patches on dirt roads leading to the north entrances of Dictum and Second mountain.

Also I would love to go camping but my Fiance would kill me if I missed the engagment party. I would be up for a camping trip at a later time.

What are the regulations for camping in the GW Nat forest?

I would also love to go camping and wheeling one weekend in the future, possibly when it is 40 or above during the day. I'm not sure exactly what the regulations are, but we've always just set up where it looks like others have. No problems yet.

Regulations are fairly standard. It's always a good idea to call the park office before a camping trip to make sure of details like fires and such.

Cold as hell this weekend up there. We were up on Skyline last night for some x-country skiing, 15 knot winds and about 12 degrees. Damn miserable. Hell, we're only at 1500 ft and it's around zero this AM but the winds have died down.

Well, my wife and I debated long and hard and ended up not going. The thought of dragging her into 4 degree temps with even more windchill--I just couldn't do it. It works out, though, because we went hiking today and will go snowboarding on Wednesday. We'll reschedule for a weekend that isn't quite so arctic.

It's pretty good so far. I have a built-in partner for excursions. But such cold temps with negative wind chill is a bit much to ask of her for a "fun" weekend. :-) We're still working out the details but overall it's been good. It wasn't too large of a change since we were already living together.
