I'm planning to go to Moab this summer, (18 hours of windshield time one way) and wonder if anyone on this board knows how to find out if any Rover-friendly groups are going to be there during the month.
I looked at Great Basin Rovers but they don't have any news.

Moab is pretty warm in July (> 100 F).

You should look for events and posts on Discoweb and referenced sites. Might try to look at UT, AZ, NM and CO Rover club sites. 2 in CO are roverriders.org, solihullsociety.org.

I think you can look for paid events and trips as well, but likely they avoid it during July and August.

Shawn,
I'm planning a trip to Moab in late June. I have been there in both July and August. It's pretty hot, and I live in west Texas. Any flexability on your travel days? Where are you coming from?

David,

I have some flexibility in days, just working out the best arrangements around my wife's commitments.

I'm coming from Calgary, Alberta. I was in Moab in September, 2001 and it was quite nice. As a desert is quite far from my mind right now (-17F outside) I could use the warmth.

Calgary gets hot in summer (a really hot day is 100F) but it isn't the desert!

I went with stock tires, no lift, winch or lockers. Sacrificed the bumper caps and front air dam but didn't hurt anything else. This time I'll have some protection, maybe a lift but no lockers or winch.

I had fun on low level trails, Fins & Things etc.

What trails have you run there?

Whenever you decide to go keep us informed here. I am only about 6 hours from Moab and might consider heading out there, even though it will be blistering hot. April/May would be ideal.

I have run alot of the trails down there (like 10-15), but many of the really hard ones I have done only with experts (I consider myself intermediate or so).

Thanks for the link Brian. I bought Charles Wells' "Moab, UT Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails" when I was down there and found it excellent.

I will definitely keep posting here as I get closer to the trip. As you know, trail experience in the group is a precious asset. I probably wouldn't have tried "Kenny's Climb" (VERY unsuccessful) without a locker if someone was there to tell me it was a dumb idea.

It's true that April/May would be the best time and have seen that the "Spring Trip" seems most popular with groups going but I don't think we can leave that soon. (Wife's job contract will still be in full swing)

Shawn,
We were there September 2002, and the weather wasn't bad. The Dll was bone stock, except for diff guards and a skid plate. We did only moderate trails and went on the beginning of Fins & Things. When on the 1st major obstacale (per the Wells book), we couldn't figure out how to get off it without a)getting the nose of the vehicle burried in the sand and/or b)tearing off the air dam or c)both. Since then, I have added a ARB bull bar, 2" OME lift with HD shocks and 32" mud tires. I would love to have someone with experience to go along on the difficult trails.

David,

LOL, that brings back a memory! I found that the stock air dam folds up nicely when used as a shovel. I still have the stock bumper w/ wrap-around grill, but removed the air dam and trimmed the side caps with a sawzall to match.

I asked my wife what she thought of the change, and she said "what change? I thought you washed it" (love that girl)

Shawn,
Right now we have the last two weeks of June schedualed off, but a considering moving up to May. Any chance these dates could work for you? BTW, the OK Rovers club is doing a Moab run in early May. Check out their site (club section, under Resources).
Dave,
No, unfotunately we arrived in Moab the Sunday night the rally had eneded. I didn't find out about the rally till after we go home. :( We are going to try to go this year.:) My plan is to do as much off roading as possible before my Roadside Assistance exprires in October.

Well Guys,

As this thread has progressed, I've worked the schedule back to June and am working on May. As it stands now, July is out.

David, thanks for the link to OK rovers, there is great information there.

Cheers,
Shawn

Just for fun I checked out the route on MapQuest. For me to go, it would be:

Total Estimated Time: 35 hours, 17 minutes

Total Distance: 2146.27 miles

That is going from Jacksonville, NC to Moab, UT.

Well,

I have to be back home on the 19th, but I think I could be in Moab on the 16th and 17th ready to hit some trails on both days and drive back on the 18th.

Not 100% sure, but I will try.

Moab in July is awesome! Nobody is there and everything is cheap. Trails are completely empty. Heat is not that bad really. I never even use A/C. Just dress appropriately and don't have one of those hood blackouts on your truck! or else!!!

Keep us posted, I would probably drive out with some folks.

Well, it's getting close to trip time. With any luck, I will be in Moab Saturday night, May 10. The organized runs are Monday through Wednesday. I will be looking to hook up with anyone else who wants to go for Thursday and Friday, maybe Saturday. Anyone still intersted?

David,

We're in Arch View on the 16th and 22nd. Moab Rim Cabins 17-21. I'm shooting to hit town noon on the 16th.

I thought we'd start with Fins N Things, it's close to town and won't scare the kids too bad for a starter trail. Will bypass Kenny's climb though!

What day are you driving out? You know there is a rock crawling competition over the Memorial Day weekend? Just stay the week :-)

Shawn,
We will probably heading out Saturday the 17th. But I may stay till the 19th or 20th. We will be at Cottonwood Condos. I don't remember if I gave you my cell #, so here it is: 915.413.1080. Call when you get in. Fins could be cool.

My wife and I will be down the 16-18th and wouldn't mind running a trail with another rover. We'll probably be camping up in sand flats(right by fins n things). I think we'll try to run fins n things, poison spider, hells revenge and possibly elephant hill. FWIW LR American Fork and LR Centerville dealerships(both in UT) will be down there for their annual spring trip they put on for employees and customers who want to go. We didn't sign up but expect to see a lot of rovers.
Give us a call if you want to meet up 801.360.4184

Well folks, it's been a long time since this thread started.

I'm just finishing out the afternoon here at work on Wednesday and packing to leave tomorrow morning. As mentioned above, we're planning to hit Moab about noon on Friday.

My mobile is 403-615-1714 and I'd love to meet as many D-webbers as possible while we're down. (16-23 May)

Cheers,

Shawn

Marc Olivares and everyone else,

Im an SLC Disco owner too! I will do what I can to go anytime! I am interested in starting or helping with a Utah Disco Owner's Fraternity (Sorority?), There doesnt seem to be any "unity" here, other than what LR-AF and Centerville put on... and i will admitt, and repent, that I have wheeled with the Utah X-terra Owners Club who really do have their act together; for good trail pics and information go to WWW.UXOC.ORG

Get in touch and ANYONE HEADING TO ANYWHERE IN UTAH, DROP ME AN EMAIL...

ryan,
welcome to the brotherhood? LOL
check with utah rover club
Craig Hansel and Matt Rigby pretty much coordinate the years events for the club. they are super great people and are very welcoming to new commers. The club is some what linked to great basin rovers, in that Bill started it and every one who works there attends most of the functions. Matt and Craig have maintained a good sized mailing list and are really great about keeping people informed of upcomming events.
the club is open to all rovers (and the ocasional suzuki "the mini rover") and the pace is usually pretty relaxed.
You are also welcome to come with the Redrock group, smaller group, all modified rovers and a little more aggressive.
either way we're glad to have you. i am familar with the x-terra club and yeah they do put on a nice event.
drop me an email marc and we'll chat.
and once again welcome!!
