Hello,
We are looking a second (or more) vechicle to do Lockhart Basin with. Would also consider doing the Maze if someone was interested. We will be arriving at Canyonlands Needle district around noon or so on Monday Sep 8th. We will be around till the following Sunday and will be doing the LR national rally, Thurs through Saturday. Anyone up for it?

We are also planning on arriving in Canyonlands on that Sunday or Monday. Definitely one, perhaps two Disco II's from AZ. Staying all week for the rally.

Sounds good. We won't get to Needles till about 1 or so in the afternoon on Monday. Game plan is to do Elephant Hill first, the start up Lockhart Basin and camp that evening. We will be in a D II as well. If you want to meet up, email me a dsum@mindspring.com. Thanks.

This is a fabulous run. I have done it from North to South by travelling over Hurrah Pass/Chicken Corners and then up Lockhart. Camped outside Needles and did Elephant Hill along with some other runs the next day. If I were to suggest a direction, it would be this way as you will do the more difficult parts of Lockhart early in the day. It also gives more time to play in Needles which is an amazing area.

Curtis,
Thanks for the input. Due to time constraints, we will probably opt for South to North, to finish in Moab. However, if we change our minds, what other areas or trails do you suggest in the Needles area?

David,

I actually forgot you are going to the rally and have to work that into your schedule. You should be fine going S to N. I am not sure of your exact route, but going all the way over to Needles just to do Elephant Hill may not be that exciting. There is a lot back there including The Colorado/Green River Confluence (including Silver Stairs), and if you head south from the Confluence trail it will take you on a 50 mile loop back around to the highway.

I really need to grab my guidebook because I forget the names of the trails. Let me try to do that tomorrow. You can also travel this loop from the highway halfway to Needles and wrap around to EH and then start up Lockhart.

One note on Lockhart Basin: If travelling from s to N, it will be great scenery and some rough trail, but pretty boring and VERY long. Roughly 70 miles from the highway to Kane Creek Road. The one challenging section takes up about a mile and can range from tricky fun in dry to near-impossible in wet. If you go all the way to the climb up and get nailed by one of our fall rainstorms...be prepard for a very long trip back around. Also be fully self-supporting because you will probably not see a soul on Lockhart.

More tomorrow and a good book reccomendation as well.

Thanks. I have experienced some "near impossible in wet" in Moab last Sept. Your right; some trails when wet are extremely difficult, dangerous and/or impossible. I now have a winch and will be getting a Pull Pal. We are still looking for a second vehicle. And I would really like to hear more about that 50 mile loop.

I did an overnight at Lockhart Basin this past April, and was in awe of the scenery. Huge mesas, towering cliffs, stars and satellites and bats at night. I concur with Curtis, however. You should really try to run the trail north to south; you are selling yourself short of any challenge on this trail if you do it south to north (that is, of course, if there is no rain). Sounds like you might be trying to do too much in too little time? Forego the Needles (you can see them from Lockhart). This is just one trail that deserves to be done without the rush. And the drive out through Indian Creek back to Moab really doesn't take that long. Because I had time limits, I could not do EH the following day, but many in our group did. I have to go back to do that one, and am considering doing Lockhart again because I felt one day was just not enough time. And yes, do take boat loads of water, as there is none. My husband and I are still debating on whether or not to go to the rally. If we do, I'll probably take Bill Burke's instructional course. I sure would love to do Lockhart in the fall though; the weather would be perfect! Whatever you do, Happy Trails!

Cheers,
Jacquelyne

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The interior of your car will turn desert red. I made the mistake of keeping my windows open the entire time (dog in back). It took me two weeks to get most of it out. Bring seat covers if you've got them, and plenty of cloth to dust the dash off. (Unless you like the taste and feel of gritty sand in your teeth)! Or, better yet, be the leader...Have fun.

Jacquelyne,
Thanks for the input. We will probably end up doing the trail North to South. We will probably start after 2 PM from Moab and spend the night on the trail, finishing it on Tuesday and then doing EH. We are also thinking of driving Bobby's Hole/Beef Basin and spending Tuesday night on the trails as well. We are STILL looking for a second vehicle (or more)to join us. Any takers?

Hi David,
We are still planning on being in Canyonlands before the rally. However, the plan is to take back roads up from AZ. We will drive through the BLM lands from Blanding through Beef Basin and do the S-N route of Elephant Hill. Probably not enough time for Lockhart, as we intend on spending some time in Canyonlands. As you are now going to go N-S, perhaps we will cross paths. If not, see you at the rally,

cheers,
Ted
