I did alot of MTBiking up there and now that I have a rover i wanna do some offroad. I'm new at this so i gotta start off slow. I wanna know where in ringwood? when? I'm from NYC and i'm slowly preparing the jeep for some wheeling!!!
I would love to get a lil feel of what wheeling is, lol.

John,

I went to Ringwood in th elate 90's on dealer sponsored trips.

When I called the park office a couple of months ago to find out about offroading, they told me they don't allow it any more, so I haven't pursued it.

Yet, there are some pictures in the picture galleries of 'wheeling in Ringwood.

Can anybody else chime in? I'd be up for a trip there if it was legal.

Work is in progress to authorize some land rover trips there, but be patient someone will let you know when it happens.

Hi Guys
We're working on getting access to some private land near Ringwood.
Also, working with the Ringwood State Park on various possibilities.
(See "Ringwood" article in LRM "November" issue).
Stay tuned.

hey all, i live in ringwood ('99 DII OME) and looked at the pictures labeled "ringwood" and "ringwood2" in the trails section. I think the 2nd set of pics are actually in Mahwah in some Bergen County Park land that borders Ringwood State Park. The first set i have no idea where they are - i'm interested to know though!

I'm also trying to organize a trail clean up in Ringwood State Park with the R.O.V.E.R.S. Club and the park maintenance crew some time in early spring. We did a trail clean up in the summer that went well, however, was not well attended. Thanks to Steve, there will be an article on the clean up in the November issue of LRM. Hopefully, more people will be able to attend the next one since I have much bigger plans for this one.

The official status of Ringwood State Park (Brushwood Section) is that vehicles ARE permitted, BUT only with a permit. In order to get a permit you must be accessing the woods for hunting, fishing, use of the model airplane field, or are handicapped - however, I got a permit for trail maintenance so I could get into the woods to plan out the clean ups.

As Steve mentioned there is some private property around here with some good trails that we are working on for a club event and if i get permission i'd certainly be willing to give a tour of the woods to any other local rover owners.

Frank, those pics were taken in the Mahwah area, right off of Stag Hill Road. Some folks call it the "Stag Hill" trail and other call it the "Junkyard" trail ('cause of all the abandoned vehicles, mainly Beetles).

Since you have a DII and are still in school (I think you had mentioned a while ago that you were 18 or so) I would not recommend you do the trail alone.... make sure you have a few buddies with you. The reason I say this is because the trail runs close to the Mahwah Indian reservation which is a very poor reservation...

You will come across some folks on quads with rifles (even though it's not hunting season).... local authorities do not bother these folks...

Last time we went (Ringwood2) the trail was impassable due to a large mud hole and no go-around. The only way to complete the trail would've been to cut down some trees and that was not an option.

We've always had problems with the Rangers on the Park side so haven't done those trails in years. What's the Park side of the trail like? Easy, moderate or difficult?

On the Stag Hill side we've had stock DII and the only sustained minor body damage.

This sunday I am heading up to exit 16 on the Thruway to check out a trail. I've also heard of trails in the Sterling Forrest area but don't have an exact location yet. Do you know of any other trails in the area?

Next time you have a cleanup in Ringwood I'll get my buddies together to help out.

Later,

John

Hey John, I'm well aware of the locals at Stag Hill, Ringwood has their own clan of them which I had the pleasure of going to school with - they have quite a reputation. The Ringwood group also lives in an area with trails - however I never had the guts to try them. As for the Stag Hill trail (the one along the pipeline right?) I only ventured a few hundred feet up before a local saw me and told me I better get out, in some not so nice words!

As for other trails in the area, West Milford is home to the Newark Watershed - huge! - covering both west and east sides of Rt. 23 near the Clinton Road area. But not legal. There is also Burnt Meadow Road (off of Greenwood Lake Tpk) which is a drive in itself (and legal!) and has some private property with some good trails off of it - I knew the old land owner and used to wheel often there - but don't have permission from the new guy yet - however the old guy said the new guy wouldn't give a damn if i went up there. Some of the land off of the road is park land - controlled by Ringwood State Park - another area for a clean up!

As for Ringwood State Park itself, the trails are generally very tame - i drove my stock 2 door tracker through without a problem (my dad has the DII). However, when you get further back you begin to approach the Stag Hill area(but are still in the park) and the trails get much rougher and are used MUCH less by mtn bikers. This is the area I want to do the clean up in - it needs both branch/tree trimming as well as removal of about 15-20 tons of garbage (yes, there are at least 4 beatles!) I need help planning out the hole thing - its not a one day event - and there are the usual "politics" that must be taken care of with the park staff - that's something I've gotten good at. I certainly could use your help if your interested.

What trails are off exit 16? I know there are some trails in Cornwall at the Black Rock Fish and Game Club - but this is private land (the dealer had a Wheels event there).

Sorry for the long post
Frank

That's the one.

> I only ventured a few hundred feet up before a local saw me and told me I better get out, in some not so nice words!

It's best to do it with 5 vehicles or more...

I've heard about that event....

Someone posted a msg (last year) on this board:

There is a trail off exit 16 of 87 North about 20 miles outside of Albany. The trail is only about two miles from 87 n and it is legal, (New York State Motor vehicle trail.) (Turn left off ex 16 ramp and drive about two miles until you see Woddard Rd. Make left on Woodard rd and offroading starts where road ends.) Trail about 4 or 5 miles of good offroading. There are some other trails in Harrisonburg, New York. Trails are pretty good but but not that long. All trails are legal.

I don't know what he means by Exit 16 being only 20 miles from Albany?! Do you know?

There are a few places in Central Jersey right off of Rte 280 that we go to when it's flooded or lots of snow. Check out the Trails/events under "Route 280 - NJ".

John, I think I found your Woodard Rd 20 miles from Albany off Exit 16....but it took a while. It is actually North of Albany. Woodard Road is just NW of the town of Wilton just off of rt 33 before it meets rt 101. Zip code therei s 12831. Coming off of exit 16 you head west on rt 33 to Wilton, go thru town and Woodard rd is on the left.

Keep me posted about the cleanup and also any rides to Stag Hill this year.
