Hello,

well, here's what we have just a few minutes away from our house:
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=17&n=4589004&e=473269&s=50&size=l&datum=nad83& layer=DRG25

there is this area, there are no roads coming to it ... so I would guess that there are no houses ... so, whose property is it there ? Can we off-road there ?

Also, what defines "pipeline" ?

and also, we have one place where there are even no gates to the "high voltage line" ... and there are pretty nice hills ... can we off-road there ? (at least semi-legally)

Thanks :-)

I'll dive into this :-)

The pipeline is (probably) a natural gas pipeline buried underground (although it could be on the surface a la Alaska). The land through which the pipeline runs is, strictly speaking, owned by whomever owns the land.

Before you get all snippy that that's obvious, what I mean is that the company that owns the line itself may not own the ground; they may only have an easement from the property owner that allows them to use that land for running the gas (probably for a fee).

That said, I'd go to my county/city/whatever clerk's office and ask to see the property data for that/those plot(s) of land. That would give you the owner's name(s). You could then contact the owner(s) and try to get permission to drive on their land...good luck with that, given the close proximity to Cleveland my guess is they don't want a bunch of "yahoos" tearing up their ground. :-) It may be worthwhile to offer some money in exchange for written permission -- I know of someone who buys offroading access in a rural county on a yearly basis. The "driving fee" covers the cost of repairing the land, although in this case the owner uses the money for a party at the end of the summer...

If those plots are privately owned, it is illegal for you to drive on the land without consent (trespass). This may even be the case if they are state-owned properties (i.e., if it's like Wisconsin and everything is restricted access).

Best to do your homework on this before driving into something.

Everything is legal until you get caught. Check the area thoroughly for no trespassing signs. it may be someones investment and they dont even know it exists, or dont care until they get board approval etc. there is a lot of property like this in NJ. Powerlines and pipelines are a great place to go if you have easy access to it. They are rarely patrolled by the company or owner. But like everything, be careful.

Not getting caught doesn't make it legal or acceptable.

Trespassing is what gives off-roaders a bad name -- you might be decent in handling the terrain there, but someone driving by may not agree and call the police.

Just saying...getting permission ends all of the bad outcomes from a nosy person calling the cops.

Go ahead and drive it - tear it up. You haven't really lived until a PO'd landowner has a gun pointed at your head.

I've replied to your posts here about wheeling in this area and I've emailed you and never a response. Unless that is the one piece of top secret public land that allows wheeling in Ohio, it is illegal.

Here's a little known fact: Ohio has exactly 0 miles of designated legal public 4WD trails. But don't let that stop you!

*sighs* NEVER one should go wheeling unless its designated area, or your very own private plot, or your friend private plot. "Everything is legal until you get caught" is exactly kind of attitude why trails getting closed and 4wheeling getting bad image in eyes of public.

TREAD Lightly

Anton - easiest way to do it, is to go to closest land management buerau, and ask them. Or forest service if its sorted out by them. Until then - i wouldnt step on it, overwise you might get yourself in trouble.

Geez, you guys cant take a joke. I guess its hard to sense sarcasm on the in internet. TREAD Lightly, dont leave any evidence. Knowing there is a crazy land owner with a shotgun near by does add a bit of fun to the experience, but i guess its not for everyone. Sergei has a good idea, but most property is private and youll have a hard time getting permission to drive on it.

Come to NJ. We got the Pine Barrens, and its mostly legal.
