When's the earliest time you can comfortably be at the 70 circle? Peter was saying 8 but I thought we had it down for 9?

Dont forget the waders:-)

I'll try to be there 8.30 but no guarantees. If you install the topo quad stuff (carefull to chose the biggest hard drive space) then we may only have to get the GPS working again and that won't take too long.

Oh I forgot the quad disk doesn't install, your program does but not the data disk. You can run it from the CD if you like, or copy the whole CD (data folder + the 2 files) all into a new folder on your hard drive and go to the locations button (forgot where it is) to enter the path. Call me today some time.

See ya tomorrow.

Well Peter, its a miracle we got that installed and working. I got a bit concerned on the skip-files part of the installation, but I suspect all the files are there from the previous install. Well, we;ll see tomorrow. Baby is up and screaming now at 2am, so I may be needing extra coffee Jaime, if you're reading this. Do't forget to not grind it too finely.

Dean:-)

Jaime - thanks for the pics! But it won't download at home on the dialup, I'll have to look at them tomorrow. I'll email some too.

Also, I've been looking at the area around where he bamboo trail was once, and there are a whole load of single-dash trails in that area, and you know with the laptop now it seems to be simple enough to make a day to run a whole bunch of them soon:-)

Dean -

Yeah.. the zip file is about 2 meg.. I guess Peter is out of luck :-(

I just discovered that my Magellan GPS will not only up-download to a PC, but it can also be used as a GPS receiver to track directly to a laptop.

All I had to do was turn on NMEA on the GPS. My unit is serial port, so I'm gonna take it out for a spin with the NT laptop to see how it works.

If NMEA is a standard that all topo mapping software uses, then maybe we could all be using the same thing. I'm now using Magellan's MapSend Topo, and it seems pretty detailed, but maybe next time we could compare it against what you have and see how similar they are in their level of detail.

What's the name of the topo software you're using? Can it import/export to Excel or ASCII? I can do that with Mapsend, so it would be a good way to exchange routes.

Jaime,

The best program I know is the Topo Quads by delorme, it has the exact same maps as the paper ones you can buy at the ranger's station in Atsion (USGS maps). I think you'll be able to get it to work fine with the nmea receiver. Email me offline. Each state has its own set of CDs that are basically scanned images of the maps. I have the NJ set.

Dean

ps I have mapped out a long trip covering many parts of the pine barrens that we have never explored, some of them marked on my map as 'jeep trails' lol. Once you have the software, I can send you an exported file that you can bring in and see what's in store for us. Several trails I noticed head directly down to the rivers that empty into the Atlantic a few miles further down, and according to the maps they are very marshy and swampy, so we'll have to see what they are like. I presume Peter is reading this:-) Even if the trails aren't difficult, and I highly doubt that, I think the day will be a good scenic drive anyway.

No, the last cherokee to try to follow us hydrolocked the engine, which basically just blew up.

I'm afraid deep water is going to be on our agenda every trip though!

Hi Scott....I guess you didn't see Dean's bilge pump...

The man is serious about deep water. Click on his name and you'll see his profile pic. I took that picture a couple of weekends ago.
