What can anyone tell me about off-roading in the Savoy Mountain region of Western Massachucetts?

Thank You,

Tim

Tim, are you in southern VT, near or in Wilmington? I swear I've been 'sighting' your truck the last two weeks driving around there.

What would you like to know about Savoy?

It was not me Dave I am way up north. I do love the Wilmington/Dover area and have MTB there. Is the Dover Inn still open? Great food! I asked because I saw this website http://www.state.ma.us/dem/parks/svym.htm and it looked like a nice place to camp. I thought I saw a posting about off-road trails in that area and thought I could combine it with some family camping next summer with friends from MA. It looked like a nice place to meet in the middle for us. We are looking for camping and mountain biking and some light trails to explore with my RR. So what's it like and how do you get there? Are the trails state owned? The idea of state owned trails for motorized vehicles is odd to us, big no no in VT!

Always seems to be a large number of classic Rangies in VT. The offroad trails I know of in the Savoy region are all rocky with at least 1-4 major obstacles at any point in the trail. Meaning, they are not easy or even moderate trails. Most of them are old town roads, which are much like Vermont in the sense that they remain open because they existed for some time. But many clubs fight very hard to keep them open. The terrain in the Berkshires and Savoy is surprisingly steep, especially in the North Adams and Northampton areas. So, to be honest, you'd be hard pressed to find trails here you would want to go alone on and not expect to get stuck or damaged (rocks). I can't think of any off-hand that might fit your needs, but I'll take a look at my journal tonight and see what pops up. The good news is, that the latest MA Delorme shows most of the offroad trails in the Savoy region that are legal. But that's about where it ends.

I haven't done any mtb'ing in Savoy, but I would bet it's pretty good. Plus your close to southern VT favorites like Ascutney and so on.

Have you been up to Burke VT and the Northeast Kingdom? I will bet money that place has some of the best MTB CC riding on the east coast.

Yes I have ridden in Burke and it's excellent. With a large amount snowmobile operators and the very organized VAST snowmobile trail system already in place, mountain biking is only getting better up there. It's proven to be great for their economy also, so everybody wins.

Maybe Savoy is a bit too much for me now. I do have to drive it home. However I'll get a Delorme anyway and check on the trails and regions you mentioned.

Thanks,

Tim H.
