How are the trails here, I see ROAV is having a members ride in May and was wondering about the trails, if they are difficult, or so easy that they are boring? It's a 7-8 hour drive for me so just wanted to find out early.

Were you planning on attending the ROAV event, or just going for a ride?

If you are planning on the event, you would have a blast.

If you were just coming to ride the trails with one of two trucks, 7-8 hour drive may be disappointing. Although, camping in the GWNF is alot of fun. The views are awesome, hiking can be a challange, and fishing is really good. Plan on more than a 2-3 day trip to make it worth the wild fro your area.

I figured this was a good post to jump on ...

I was planning on a trail ride this upcoming Monday (2/16).

Does anyone know if the trails are covered with snow? Conditions?

Or better yet, provide a link to trail conditions this time of year?

Are you talking about the GWNF trails? If so, what part of the GWNF are you planning on running?

Will -

Yeah, the GWNF trails I think. Waynesboro/Afton vicinity. (not real familiar with the area) I'd be coming up with another friend, who is in a Jeep. He knows the area much better than I do.

We're looking for something with some short hikes along the way. And we're both stock so that's why I was wondering about conditions.

Are you going to be out that day?

As of last weekend they were snow covered and slightly icy. But that was up in the Harrisonburg area.

K, You may be talking about the Shoecreek area. You should be OK there stock. There is still some snow at lower elevations (2-3") It is real crusty right now from the melting during the day and re-freezing during the night.

A bunch of trails off the Parkway. I'm not certain what the area is called.

What cities/counties does GWNF cover ?

You might check with the parkway rangers, generally it's gated there at Afton both N to Skyline Dr and South on the Pkwy. There's a back way into the pkway for residents, but most of the trails that way (Big Levels, etc.) are gated too.

Shenandoah/Skyline boundaries are gated year-round from Afton to 33, the only way in is via the park entrances at Afton, Swift Run (33) and further north. They really frown on vehicles running around anywhere up there in the SNP. There are some great hikes up there. We've been hiking that section from the eastside for 5 years and still haven't done all the trails.

I called the Ranger office today and they told me that most of the trails are closed for the winter.

What's open currently in the Charlotteville, Staunton, Harrisburg area?

I'll need directions or links to web sites for information.

Thanks!

Take I-81 N to exit 256, follow rt.33 west to Rawley springs. You can't miss the trails. Let me know what day(s) you will be running trails

3 of us - 1 Disco, 1 Jeep, and 1 4-Runner. Haven't decided where to head to yet. It will be all day Monday (2/16).

I'll post here as soon as I know where we're going.

Will - If you can suggest some trails and want to meet up with us, then that's cool. We'd probably be better off with someone who is familiar with the area.

What are the current TRAIL CONDITIONS ? I'm a little concerned about running totally stock at this time of year.

Thanks,
Kris -- kris@ckmweb.com

Most of the snow has mealted... There may still be some crusty spots on the back side of the ridges. For a stock truck you may want to check out 2nd Mtn. or Dunkle Hollow/Meadow Knob/Flag Pole. To play around a little bit you may try Kepheart Run, Lost Mirrors, or the Dry Run dam area. I still may have to work Monday, but things could change. Are you going to be meeting in Harrisonburg at a certin time?

Most likely try to meet around 9am. Where? I don't know yet.

Dry Run Dam sounds like fun. I'm assuming these are all of Rt. 33 ?? Directions?

Let me know if things change and if you can meet up with us.

Basicly, you just take rt.33 W. off I-81 to the base of the Mtn. When you enter GWNF there will be trails on both the left and the right. 2nd Mtn is really the only marked trail. If you get a Gazet it will show you all the other trails/fire roads.

Be sure to obay the laws. Don't get off the trails and into the streambeds. More likley than not, you will get caught.

We made it up to GWNF in Harrisonburg today; ended up making it back home too, with no casualties.

So my questions now are:

1.What's a Gazet and where do I purchase one? I had assumed it was a local newspaper, but Sheetz didn't carry one, nor did the lady working the counter have any clue.

2. What trail has a wood shack next to it? It's the one past 2nd mountain. I'd like to know the name of it because it was pretty sweet. I really enjoyed the criss crossing thru the stream beds.

3. What trails intersect with the shack trail? We hit one trail that looked like it was traversing a small mountain. We ended up taking this small hill lined with a guard rail and followed that up and around to the rest of the trail.

Thanks guys!

1. A Gazetteer; it's a book of topo maps 2. Salt Shed; It's where the state would store road salt years ago 3. Lost Mirrors; at the end of the trail you can take a left and run up to Dry Run dam.

Thanks again, Will.

On Dry Run dam, is there actually a dam, or is that what I passed at the beginning of the trail?

Where does Dry Run take you? We got stopped at a downed tree at what I think was about half-way through.

I will go up there this week and clear out that tree.

Once you get in there about 5 miles the trail splits. If you go left the trail dead ends. If you go right the trail dead ends. It is awesome camping in there during the summer. If you look at a GPS unit you will be suprized at how close you are to Union Springs road. it's a nice drive, but nothing hardcore back there.
