I'm familiar with most of the trails in the immediate Blacksburg area, but am interested in checking out some a little further SW of me -- while perusing over the DeLorme Atlas yesterday, I found some trails that are new to me at least, and am wondering if someone here knows about them (Leslie, are these in your neck of the woods?)

In the fourth edition DeLorme (2000), they are on pages 40 & 24 ... on page 40, look in cell C2, and all points SW ... there are trails at Walker Mountain, Cove Mountain, Tract Mountain, as well as south of the Gatewood Reservoir at Indian Grave Creek.

On page 24 (just south of page 40), in cell A2, take 121 N to Max Meadows, then continue on 712 -- this intersects a "jeep trail" on Miller Creek at Little Brush Mountain.

Does anyone know anything about these?
TIA,
-Alan

Alan, I e-mailed you once before about trails. If you don't mind showing a newbie with a stock disco the ropes, I'd love to tag along on a trip. Preferably something low-risk, as I still owe $4k on my disco.

Let me know when y'all go and I'll try to get away from school. I've got a '97 Disco with OME HD suspension, X9 winch, and a couple other mods and am always itching to hit the trails.

So where are you going to school Kronie? I know Dave Statler is at VT, are you as well? I'm an alum, but still live in the area. Hopefully we can find a weekend sooner than later to get together and check out some trails ...

Marco, are you in Burke as your profile states? The trails I'm looking at right now are a good ways from there, we'd love to have you, but you may not want to drive 4 hours for a trail system that apparently no one knows anything about ...

Alan,

There on pg 40, I did a good bit of field mapping on the north flank of Walker (D1). A lot of the "trails" have been tank-trapped by the forest service (well, that would've been in '97 when I was stomping around that neck of the woods, in my earlier FSJ days...) Have to admit that I always liked the view from Walker looking down on I-77 (you have to come in off of 52... it's a straight sedate drive along the ridge-top).

I did a good bit of fieldwork east of Blacksburg (where they built the Smart Road). Go over to Ellet, head towards Ironto, and there was a road to the left that I went up to get on top of Hightop....

Just west of 77 is Burkes Garden... you can bang around there a good bit, too, especially outside the bowl (just farmland in it).

Go over towards Salem, turn off at Wabun, you can find some nice views on Poor Mtn....

Anymore, most of my driving is in the coalfield down this way, chasing down old coal mines by bouncing up logging roads (in a state Jeep instead of a Rover....)....

Usually, I would head for Damascus as a starting point, then head out from there, towards NC....

Leslie, thanks for the info ... I've been in the Blacksburg area since 1995; fought the closures on Brush Mountain, and lost -- 8 miles of trails gone. Watched as people started tearing up trails on Stroubles Creek, and saw that get gated. Currently, around here there's trails at Mountain Lake, and on the western slopes of Brush Mountain. The local 4WD club really likes Potts Mtn. up near Roanoke, but that's temporarily closed for boulder placement to keep the ne'er-do-wells on the trail. ... hopefully it'll work. I still have an almost stock Disco, so I'm not looking for anything super difficult at the moment; however, I've been 'wheeling for about 10 years now, the pinnacle being taking my D90 to Tellico a few years back. Of the areas you mention, are they mostly FS roads that are in good shape (not a bad thing), or are they fun for the weekend wheeler? Thanks a bunch!

Alan, to be honest, I would not mind driving 4 hours, just as long as I get the chance to get the tires of the Disco to meet some dirt and mud for the first time in its life, plus I think it would be a good opportunity to establish new and good relationships,

All of that is stock-Disco stuff, nothing special. Nothing like Tellico........

Leslie,
Well, finances and maturity being what they are, my D-90 is sold, and the Disco is a near-stock daily driver, so those trails may be what I'm up for now -- in a few years, I hope to have a trail truck again, but that's a ways off. Thanks for the info, hope to meet you out there someday.

The good trails are North of Charlottesville. Stock trucks wll experience good damage. But lets plan.

"Good damage?" Hmmm, I'm no math major, but last time I checked, damage=bad :-)

Alan-
I'm in school at W&L in Lexington. I haven't been able to find anything around here and from what I understand most of the good stuff is around Harrisonburg or down towards you in Blacksburg. My buddy and I went up to Big Levels near Steeles Tavern yesterday but all the trails are either tank trapped or closed for the winter and I have no clue when they'll open up again. Give me about 3 weeks and I think I'll have a free weekend to hit the trails.

I just checked out Brush Mountain and the Audie Murphy (spelling?) Memorial road last night at like 9pm. It's a really really easy drive, too easy. I was a little disappointed. I didn't actually get all the way to the memorial because the road was closed. Oh, and if you get up that way, stay to the right of the powerline -- the trail looks like it makes a Y but the left turn goes on private property - even tho there are no signs posted until like halfway up the road. The owner wasn't too happy about getting up @ 10pm to see who was going back his trail. Oops.

With that said, anyone know where there are some decent trails? I found a couple little trails but that's about it. I'd like to find something that's not too difficult, somewhere I can go by myself without much problem. Typically I get a couple hrs of free time and dont have a chance to get a group together. Spur of the moment type thing - but I still let someone know where I'm going and when I paln to be back - just in case. Anyway, let me know. Thanks.
