After living in Kure Beach for several years, we continue to subscribe to the island newspaper. In the last issue, there was an article on fees and time restrictions for wheelin' on the South End (Fort Fisher State Park). Starting February 1, there is now a $10 daily fee and operating hours (before it was open 24 hours). Hours are as follows: Nov through Feb 8AM to 6PM; Mar and Oct 8AM to 7PM; Apr, May, and Sept 8AM to 8PM; and June through Aug 8AM to 9PM. Vehicles are not allowed in the Park outside the operating hours, so overnight camping/fishing is out. This will affect The Old North State's trips. The North End is still open, but it is not nearly as nice as the South End. Factors are typical in the decision and include environmental concerns, lack of Park rangers ($/emergency response), and rednecks tearing up the marsh/fences... It's a shame. I have spent quite a few nights there and it is nice. |

I would have to say mostly rednecks, if they wouldn't screw things up you wouldn't need more park rangers. |

Matt: Thanks for the update. While we still plan to go there, it will make it different. I had a great nights sleep on a roof rack out there once. It is a shame. |

Are you allowed to have camp fires on the North end. I've been down both ends many times but never spent the night. |

I am pretty sure you can as I have been to many, but not 100% sure. Just call the Carolina Beach police and they will tell you. |
