Count me in. I've been wanting to try the trails in that part of the state for awhile. I'll bring my '85 Range Rover.

We do Florida, and others in Mass every year within BSROA's WEMA event.
We've taken two stock 4.0SE RR's down Florida, the first about 6 yers ago the second in July 02 had 245/75 MTs and a novice driver and aced it...
Just watch out for the bog at the end...left is easy, center is over three feet deep and right is dryer than it was last year and a doable section without a winch if you floor it

We attempted the bog last April...lots of Snow,Ice and Mud...didn't make it through...
A great time though!!!

What part of Mass? Can you post the exact location? If its not to far from me I may have 3 rigs interested in attending. What are the dates you are thinking about?

Steve, sorry for the delay in response!!
A stock XJ might have a bit of trouble....do you have the skids and hooks package?
The 9/10'th is still looking good.

RJ,
NEOW is a great site. It sounds like the repair expedition on the 26th might be something worthwhile for all of us (Rover, Jeep, LC, etc.) to get involved with. I'm going to try and contact Paul and see if I can be of any help.

Hi RJ
The XJ has tow hooks but no skids. I could fabricate them if they are a must. The most wheeling I've done with it is mud and rutted dirt trails but no rocks. let me know Thanks again.

i would be worried about a hummer, as there are a few tight spots on the trail. would be fun as hell to watch though! a stock XJ may also have a few issues, but nothing a strap wont cure. ill probably be there in a white classic range rover on big swampers, and plan on taking both the hard routes in the bog at the end :)

I just blew a head gasket in my Range Rover this afternoon. I've got to get this beast apart and get the heads to a machine shop for a valve job. This better not interfere with the 9th and 10th otherwise you'll see me on the trail with my wife's VW Cabrio!!!!

we'll have plenty of straps!!

I got to test the snorkel this weekend!!! Up to the door handles of the XJ!!! I was impressed!

If there's too many trucks or we're still having issues with Old Fla Rd. we may run part of this trail in Vt....there are TONS of trails to choose from, but I have think Old Fla Rd, will be open for business...

I was just looking at the NEOW thread about next Saturday and I sure hope a lot of Rovers are showing up or we'll be HEAVILY out numbered! I'm waiting to hear from a couple of people who may join me but they'll be coming in Jeeps and a Hummer! RJ, I have to figure out the quickest way up to the trail from my part of CT. Is anyone else going up from the NW corner of CT? BTW, I, just like the person in one of your photos and on te NEOW thread, will be coming without a rear bumper. I have to get a couple of tow points installed this week.

no worries about no rear bumper, just as long as there's a towpoint! LOL!!

Joe,

Do you have front and rear recovery points? Meaning, NOT factory tow hooks? If you do, and your okay with the possibility of scraping your undercarriage or slight damage elsewhere, I would think you could make it. Their are go-arounds for all of the major obstacles on this route. Given the rain and leaves, it's going to be slick (maybe snow there now).

Another idea, if your uncertain and don't like being uncertain about a new trail. Then you should come up and ride shotgun with someone.

RJ, are you going to send DWeb some pics of the event?

Let me know and I'll send them mine as well.

Thanks again for organizing it. We had a damn good time. That trail was much more technical than we thought. My buddies Toy cruiser held up very well.

Let me know on the order for those quick-disconnects. The 90 sorely needs them.

Hey Dave, I have tons of photos of your D-90 and your friends Land Cruiser. I'm having extra copies made up this weekend so if you send me your address I'll get some pictures off to you. Most of the photos I have are of the trucks either immediately in front of or behind us. Believe it or not but just as I started that first obstacle my wife ran out of film and had to change rolls!!! By the time she reloaded I was already up the hill. It was an amazing a day. When I checked underneath the Rangie I discovered quite a mangled crossmember. Oh well, better that than the ••••••. Chalk it all up to battle scars!!!

RJ, I have plenty of pictures of your cousins (he was your cousin, right) Disco. I have a feeling that might have been the most photographed truck on the trail that day. Did he make it back to NH without any problems? Duct tape...did NASA invent that stuff?

A few of the pics...
George made it home fine...a few dings and bends here and there, but intact. I just finished replacing my pinion seal...not too shabby considering George had my spotter all day LOL! I beleive Tom saved George about $10,000 in body damage!!! I tried and tried to tell George that the dents were just the truck acclimating and "self clearancing"...but he wouldn't hear of it!

Thanks Paul,

I'll shoot you an email. I have a few pics of you guys as well. Funny how that happens. I must say, you guys showed everyone up by walking your rangie up the "skewer". Hat goes off to you.

I'll send Dweb some of the Rover pics. I wonder of they would ban the Jeep pics???

i think George now has a "trail rig" rather than a mall crawler. I'm amazed that he still had his wits and sense about him after taking such a beating all day. I couldn't even watch after a while, I like the DII too much to hear it get dragged over so many rocks.

Although, I wish I got the picture of Tom lifting and levering the rear end of the DII over a rock by himself. It was dark, but I was right behind him.

David Marchand (Dmarchand)
Posted on Tuesday, November 12, 2002 - 10:44 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

Of course, you had to post the pic of the DII getting yanked up the skewer by your heep RJ...

That's funny stuff.

RJ Clayton (Tozovr)
Posted on Tuesday, November 12, 2002 - 10:53 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

I was going to post the one of George pulling me....oh wait that's right....LOL! It was me doing all the pulling!!!
Nah...I just threw that in there because George was bustin my balls about sinking the rig on the left of the last sink hole (not the main bog, just after). Headlight was under water and my Driver's side front was in a hole. We had george go wayy right and I'm not sure it was even 8" deep! 'course he drives out, gives me a shit eating grin and says, "what was so hard about that?" Bastid!
All things considered that truck did damn well. Once he's got a few inches under it, it'll do better, no doubt!
I think it must have been tough for George as it was the first time in the woods for him in that rig. That's a tough initiation run!

The scariest thing is that I was standing and watching from the front as Tom levered the thing...I didn't know he was lifting so it looked very surreal. Time to do the CDL!

One other thing I must say! It's nice to get emails from the Jeep folks who came, raving about the Rovers. Most of these guys had never seen a Rover tackle any tough stuff. You guys impressed a lot of folks. Thanks for comimg!

RJ

David Marchand (Dmarchand)
Posted on Wednesday, November 13, 2002 - 07:05 am:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

Yeah, George now knows he needs a few inches and CDL. I think he would be in good shape for the next run.

I think Paul was the Rover that did the best job out there. Just his run on the skewer was enough to make all of us want an older Rangie. I don't think he even aired down his tires. Maybe that was the trick...

RJ Clayton (Tozovr)

Paul took a very smooth approach, good constant speed kept his momentum up...George is On a Mission now...the DII will have a new stance in a week or two.

TARDIS Damage Report:

I was so impressed by the performance of this truck! By the time I had scratched, clawed, and been tugged half way thru the trail, I had visions of the carnage I must have been doing to the under carriage of the vehicle. All I could think of was that I was about to make payment #2 on it...D'oh! Other than self-clearancing the mud flaps away (didn't have the time to yank them prior to the trip), the only damage to the truck was what we've all seen with the tail light (thank God and NASA for duct tape!), and the ARB bumper got donked good. On airing the stock GY HP's up at the end of the trail, I crawled under the vehicle for a (gulp) look-see. I was amazed....the only evidence the thing had been off-road for a day was that the exhaust looked like it had a metal file taken to it for a few strokes! That and a slightly pinched and dinged crossmember. I'm still shocked....did 75 the whole way home with no vibes, clonks, or warning lights!

The ARB sliders I installed just prior to the run worked AMAZINGLY (RJ, thank you and ARB in Seattle for the GREAT deal on them, and the quick turn-around on getting them delivered!!!!). Without them, the carnage would have been unthinkable, I'm sure. I think the cost of washing all the mud off the truck (not sure if I'll do that anytime soon) will be more than the new tail light lens, which arrives today.

I seriously cannot believe how well this stocker performed. Coming soon is definitely 2" of OME stuff, 265's, swaybar discos, and a CDL kit, but it's so great to have driven the thing on a very technical run at stock to gain an understanding of the capabilities built in from the factory. I'm really looking forward to another stab at "That Road" in the spring with a little more clearance, and some decent sneakers.

Also, hats off to Tom for spotting for me. He did a GREAT job picking good lines, and I never thought he'd have the upper body strength to lift a rover (okay, the whole fulcrum principle applied there....) LOL. His mead (sp) at the campsite was GREAT, too!

Thanks to all the Dwebbers that showed for the run. While we were definitely outnumbered by the SWB Jeepers, I think we represented well.

Paul Grant (Paulgrant)

What was so cool about this weekend was how we all, Rovers and Jeepers, worked together to get each other through the nasty bits. I think I speak for all the Rovers owners on the trail that day when I say that I have a new found appreciation and respect for Jeeps. Hell, some of those rigs were like monkeys the way they climbed their way through the rocks! I'm pleased that some of the Jeepers were impressed with the Rovers on the trail. As an aside to all the DiscoWebers who may be following this thread: WE WERE SORELY OUTNUMBERED FOUR TO ONE. WHERE WAS EVERYONE???? Hopefully, next year we can light a candle under a few more Rover owners and get them out there defending the muddy oval! Oh, and Dave, as soon as I saw you up there on the skewer I ran back and aired down to about 13-15lbs. I think that definitely help me out. Also, as I'm sure your friend with the Land Cruiser will agree, sometimes there's nothing wrong with old school technology. I love the smell of flooding carburetors, it smells like...victory!

George Clayton (Offcamber)

Paul,

I agree. The level of Comeradere was really great to experience, and there were some really well equipped TJ's there. Shots and jabs on all platforms were taken in stride, and it was a real friendly meet.

I was also a little bummed at the Rover attendance, but for what we had, we had a good mix (2 Rangies, a D90, and a DSII....c'mon Series guys...we need ya!). Redeeming grace was that RJ was the only XJ there (LOL), and it was great to gaze into the cavern that is the engine well of an FJ40 again (mmmm...smell the gas and brake fluid....great memories).

Really looking forward to the next run, and hope they get all the Land-Use issues clarified to keep the trail open.

Hey George, man am I happy with your damage report. My wife and I take our hats off to you. Hopefully, next fall I'll have my Series together and I'll drive that and my wife will handle the Rangie. I need to talk to RJ about a pair of sliders for my truck. My left rear door got a little dent going over an uncooperative boulder. It's funny, I have massive sliders sitting in a box waiting to go on my Series but nothing for the Rangie.

Paul,

Thanx for the kudos. Can't wait to see the Series. There were a couple that were supposed to be there, but I guess things came up...

I am amazed at how sturdy the ARB sliders were. They bore the brunt of what I was doing, and (except for needing a bit of tightening due to my hasty install) took everything I threw at them in stride. Highly recommended, especially for the price.

My XJ is mild (3" OME and some fun stuff) but there were some TJ's and YJ's there loaded for bear. That CJ in the pics has an interior and Exo cage, all locked and flexes like mary lou retton.
The yellow and red TJ Wranglers in the pics (Jay and Brew) are both very mildly built but VERY adept rigs. They each have a 2" coil spacer lift (Brew has a 1" body lift as well). Bother are open diffed (as am I) and they run 31" TrXus MT's. By simply disconnecting the swaybars those 2 rigs walked up just about anything thrown at them. Just goes to show that you don't need a high dollar super suspension to do well. I have well Under $600 into my suspension and had a blast on my AT's this weekend.

Rj,

Nice you got that pic of me lifting the wheel on the off camber slick rock. My buddy behind my in the Cruiser said he thought I was going to roll when he saw how far that wheel came up. I knew I was leaning, but not that much.

Paul, glad to hear you aired down. If you hadn't and made it, I would have really felt bad. I need to remove the swaybars, I was sorry I never got around to it after that run.

I was at a local LR get-together last night, raving about your Grey market Rangie with stick. The Rangie guys there were drooling.

I'll send my pics to Dweb so they can post. I think I have a few of Paul.

yes, yes, yes, yes,!!!

We're going to start planning the next one fairly soon as I'd like to have it a bit earlier next year (hoping camping will be a bit more palatable for some of the others...if you had the gear it was great, but for some it was a bit cold).
Seriously, please, seriously think about coming!

So it wasn't a dream. Jen didn't get those dents going to the grocery store. Wheeew! Am I relieved. RJ, next year we're up there camping with you guys. I felt really bad having to split immediately after the run was over. Jen and I both thought that half the fun must have been reliving those moments around a fire tossing back a few beers. I can't thank all of you guys enough for a truly remarkable day.

RJ, as soon as I can free up some cash from my Series rebuild we have to talk about a set of rock sliders. Does ARB make them for Range Rovers? I'll probably have to wait until after the holidays but I NEED a set. Next week I'm going up to Rovers North to pick up a BRAND NEW bulkhead for my restoration. I'm not tooooo excited!

NIIIIICE!!! Can't wait to see the resto!

Actually the ARB side protection steps on Georges rig are for the Disco's and the Rangies...
They're not as stout as say the mantec sliders or something from RTE, but they don't claim to be. They're also half the cost. You can Hi-Lift off them and as we all saw, they saved George some $$$$$$. Money well spent, heh heh.
