Who would be interested in doing Sevenmile October 5th or 6th?

www.4x4trails.net/db_view_trail.asp?trailNum=246

If anyone is intrested Neil D says that Moodyhill/crystal Mountain is more challenging. So if everyone thinks Sevenmile would not be challenging enough we could arrange to run Moody/crystal. according to Neil a stock disco would not be able to do moody/crystal.

So far it looks like

Dave,

I might be able to do the 6th but I don't know for sure yet. Next weekend on the 29th I am going to do Holly cross again. The plan is to go all the way to the top (past the city). Generally on these preventative maintnance runs I find something that needs to be upgraded. i.e. I usually break something. Did you get laid off yet? Lets hope for the best so you can do Red Cone tomarow.

Dave,
I would love to wheel with ya on that weekend but FC is just too long of a trip. If we could hit somewhere closer I could pull it off. I'm in Florissant( 40 miles west of the springs). Let me know if that's possible. I'm sure I could round up a few trucks for that weekend.

Do you have any recomendations on what trails to run? Would the Denver area be to far?

Spring Creek would be a good one. Up neer boulder is Left Hand Canyon and Carnage Creek. I've done them both. I would rate Carnage a 7 or so but there are bybasses around the hard stuff. Spring Creek is probably a 7 also but not as many bypasses. Lots of loose bouders. Both are fun trails.

Let's all do spring creek one day. It's close, has some rough spots, and not too long. How about it?

BTW, how was the Red Cone trip. Wish I could've made it, but you know how it is...

Dave,
Spring creek would be fine. West of Denver is always cool. It's just hard to drive more than 2 hours to wheel when I have great stuff near by. Bill Moore lake is also a fun trail.

OK,

So lets get a count of who would be willing to do Spring Creek or Bill Moore on the 5th or 6th of Oct.

The 6th would work best for me and the wife, but we are flexable

Brian?
Sean?
Chu?
Chu's brother?
Mike H?

Dave,

yeah, there's an area near the top that's scattered with some bigger rocks, but there's some bypassing available if they get too big. You'll be fine though. You got about 4 inches on me anyways, so no problemo! :)

For me----I can never wheel on saturday....I am always at work. Almost every sunday works for me though. I've only done spring creek once and it was a good one. Can't count me in yet for sure but I will probably be able to go. As always I need to check with the wife...unless she has something planned. Dave---when are you going to get laid off?....this work thing you have seems to be getting in the way of your wheeling.:)

I could go for either one but I've never done Spring Creek. Can a CDL/locker challenged vehicle make it? I have to rely on the stunning performance of ETC for my wheeling.

BML is pretty easy though, sometimes crowded, but easy. Its also safe for rock sliderless trucks.

Believe it or not I do have a short break during the day when the kids are of playing game etc....We call it enrichments here. Have you guys decided on the trail? Looks like sunday is the day, I am not 100% sure that I can make it yet, but need to weigh my alternatives. I might be going down to the property to set up the tent for the winter (which BTW would make an excellent staging location for a Blanca run someday).

Lets decide on a trail.

If it snows this week will spring creek still be doable?

Or would you rather plan on Bill Moore if it snows this week?

Where should we meet? And what time?

Sean Hanagan (Seanh)

If it snows I say we do Chinaman's Gulch it's always dry there. Bill moore and Spring Creek are up there in elevation. I went to Bill Moore in June and there was still snow.

Dave_Lucas (Dave_Lucas)
Posted on Tuesday, October 01, 2002 - 11:36 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

Speaking for myself China Man would be a bit far.

How would Bill Moore be with snow on the trail?

Also Brian mentioned Lefthand? How would that trail be with a little snow on it?

Weather.com says there is a possibility of snow Saturday and Sunday

What do you guys think?

Mike Holmes (Myktoolbox)
Posted on Wednesday, October 02, 2002 - 09:40 am:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

Chinamans sounds fun but wouldnt be fair to the FC people.

I think Spring Creek + snow might knock me out of the trip. Not sure the open diffs could pull me over some of those rocks if they are covered with snow. And nobody wants to winch my DII all day do they?

Bill Moore might be ok, but the best parts are a moderate rutted hill climb and the steep hill climb before the lake. That might not be good in the snow. BM always seems to get a lot of snow too, so they probably got some last night and might get more tonight.

We might be hosed :( Anyone want to head out to Moab?

The best part of Bill Moore can be taken to the right (moguls, articulation needed), middle (loose talus, need good tires and some speed) and left (pretty straight forward). I don't remember the steep hill climb before the lake.

Mike Holmes (Myktoolbox)
Posted on Wednesday, October 02, 2002 - 02:24 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

Not RIGHT next to the lake, but the last part of the trail before you decend - the one BML is known for. But I don't remember any type of bypass. Or is that not what you mean by "taken to the right"? There may be one for the first short climb (right before you get to the spot where you can overlook Georgetown I believe).

But I haven't been there in a year so who knows if I remember correctly.

4X4 trails describes what I am saying this way:

"As you continue up the road to Bill Moore Lake the road gets steep in sections and the loose rocks may cause trouble for open differentials. This is the most difficult section and a few of the sections have optional bypasses. Once you get pass this section you'll reach a beautiful summit with a great 360º view. From here, the trail essentially drops down to the lake. The descent is also a little loose and there were a few muddy sections (!!!Please stay clear of any muddy areas. Failure to do so may cause the Forest Service to close the trail to motor vehicles!!!). You'll reach the end of the trail about 50 yards from the lake."

Neil,

I am guessing trail selection will have allot to do with how much snow we get this week, if we get very much snow Spring Creek would be out from the sound of things.

If all else fails and everyone decides to cancel I am planning on going around here maybe up the Poudre or between Boulder and Estes Park. One way or another I will go this weekend!

I'm pretty sure that Spring Creek has some good snow at this point. Any Ideas where to go? I'm in Florissant(near Hackett Gulch)so a trip real far up north is out for me. Neil, Dave, Mike and Chu where are you in CO?

The way the reports sound, considerable snow is here or on the way - all weekend too. Maybe I'll stay home and put on my front spacers and stop the nosedive of my Disco.

Here are some weather-cams. The I70 cam at Empire (Bill Moore Lake trailhead) doesn't look too bad, but all the moisture could make the trail icy. The Idaho Springs (Spring Creek) one looks the same.

www.weather.com shows that it will be fine weather in the Boulder area and in north colorado. Sunday forecast says No snow, No rain with highs in the 60's

I know that lefthand or the trails between Boulder and Estes park would be to far for Sean but would anyone else be intreted in something like that? It is about the same distance from Denver as it is from Fort Collins.

I am planning on going one way or another this weekend.

I actually may e back in for this sunday. But I will not know for sure until saturday night. I am up for any trail and I will be bringing wife and kids. When you all make a final decision let me know...and a contact phone # so I can let you all know for sure if I will be there or not. I survived holly cross last weekend in the snow without breaking anything so I am up for some more preventative maintnance.

Well guys, I just got back from St. Elmo. From 11000 feet on up there is snow. The base is about 5 to 6 inches deep. Up north it might be more since most of the storms are up there. I'd love to go on these excursions with you guys, but my work schedule just won't allow it. Plus, my stocker probably wouldn't survive the trails that you all go on. Anyway, enjoy and be safe!

I'm in Fort Collins, so Lefthand Canyon or any place eitehr up the Poudre or down by Boulder is pretty much the same drive for me. I'm game with pretty much anywhere people want to go, but if the really high country is coovered in icy badness, I dunno. I'd rather stick to the dirt. Snow, I don't mind _as much_, but ice just sucks regardless of the vehicle. My guess is that any of the places near Boulder will be wet, but still drivable. Most of my other experience in the area is to the west of Ft. Collins, Moody Hill, Crystal Mountain, Ballard Road, etc.

Dave_Lucas (Dave_Lucas)
Posted on Thursday, October 03, 2002 - 11:26 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

Ok,

If you want to go this weekend look at the two options listed and help pick one.

Option 1
Lefthand:
Close to Boulder, rated a 3 at www.4x4trails.net
But you can also play around on Carnage Canyon Rated a 6, it is loop trail off lefthand.

Lefthand
http://www.4x4trails.net/db_view_trail.asp?trailNum=81

Carnage http://www.4x4trails.net/db_view_trail.asp?trailNum=218

I have never been Lefthand, please someone with experience let us know if it would be passable when wet.

Option 2
Johnny Park and Pierson Park.

I have done this trip several times, Johnny park is rated a 4, I usually run it backwards as it is more fun that way, there are rocks to climb, mud and great views, it dumps out by Meeker and from there you can take Pierson Park to Estes, Pierson is not tough and a stock 4x4 can make it with ease but it is a great way to end the day (lots of trees changing colors now). You come off the top of a steep mountain and drop down into Estes Park.

Anyone who is interested speak up, I am planning on going on one this weekend.

Left hand canyon is a good one. I have done it and there are some good obsicles but there are also lots of bypasses that a stock vehicle should be able to get through. It looks like I will not be able to go though. bummer to miss one with so many rovers going. Hopefully we can try again next week?

Hey Brian, Have you made it through "the squeeze" obstacle without any body damage?

Still debating whether I go or not. Need to work on the track rod.

Brian Friend (Brianfriend)

Nope---

I didn't do the squeeze. I saw a toyota get stuck in it though. Very funny. He tried the momentum thing....had no winch. We left after watching him for about 20min. Let me know if you need help with the track rod. First time I did it it took me about 3 hours. Now it takes me about 20min to fix it up.....I might even be able to scrounge a used dampner for you.

Carnage looks MEAN for a vehicle without rocksliders. Lefthand is fun. It's less of a "trail" and more of a "4x4 park". It will likely be muddy, but of the two, I would prefer Lefthand.

Ok, it has been decided that we are going to Johnny Park/ Pierson Park

Sunday Oct 6th

Directions from I25

From I 25 Take the Highway Co-66 exit and go West (this exit is just past the Longmont exit to the north a few miles)

Stay on 66 Past Longmont until you enter Lyons, shortly after the road turns into a One-way you will need to get into the right hand lane and prepare to turn right at the T towards Pinewood Springs/ Estes Park

Keep going west towards Pinewood springs, a short time after you pass Pinewood Springs you will want to turn left onto the road marked as Big Elk Meadows.

Keep on the Big Elk Meadows road until you see a sign that tells you to turn to the left for Johnny Park.

I will wait at the following Areas if anyone wants to follow me up.

On your way to Lyons from Longmont you will pass a “U Pump It” gas station on your right. This is before you get to the town of Lyons I will stop and wait from 9:25 – 9:45

I will then stop at the entrance to Big Elk Meadows Road from 10:20 – 10:40

I will have My CB on Channel 7, but it is a hand held and does not get very good reception I will also have my Cell Phone with me.

***I have loaded my Phone number into my Profile here on Dweb, you can view my Profile by clicking on my name.

I would recommend that you bring a lunch.

Follow the directions I listed here, the one on 4X4trails.net will put you on the other side of the trail.
