Don't go but if you must here are some lessons learned by us locals here in San Diego.

Make sure you get Auto Insurance it is sold at the border, when driving down in Mexico most US carriers wont cover more than 50 to a 100 miles inland. Also get Life Flight Insurance and Mexican Medical insurance in addition to what you already have, you get sick or injured down in Mexico and need to seek competent medical attention your going to be in trouble and life flight to get you out is over 10k

Don't have any Fire Arms if caught your really screwed. Drugs better have them in a prescription and don't go into a store looking to by some cheep Vicoden. Bad JUJU there

If you have license plates other than California you will be stopped and fined for some BS moving violation more than once so have cash ready to pay off the cops, yes its still very third world. Oh and hide the credit cards and extra cash also have someone back home able to assist you with emergency cash if needed... Trust me on that one...

Have one person in your party able to speak Spanish more than at the High School level. No Habla down there will get you in trouble.

Remember and always be cautious once your across the border your fair game especially in the remote areas, there are roving Bandits so if you break down start to pray don't expect the police to help you until after the bandits cleaned you out. Most of them are working for the Police. And id rather use the local police than the US Consult government employees shit caned to Mexico so you can see the attitudes if you need assistance..

Sorry for the reality but I have had many family and friends get hammered hard down there and they were not looking for trouble your just a target for them and driving a nice Land Rover does not help it either. After living in San Diego for 40 years and seeing first hand how our neighbors to the south treat tourists, mainly in the non tourist areas. I have no desire to ever return to Mexico. and IMO there are much nicer places to visit in the US and Canada, If you want that Mexico flavor go to Santa Fe New Mexico... There is a LR Dealer in Albuquerque... LOL

If your still set on going wait until an event like the Baja 1000 or go in a LARGE organized group...

Dee, how long ago is this experience based on. I had a neighbor in San Jose that went every year at least a few times without incident.

Saw this thread while checking my stats....found
it very funny, needless to say Mexico, including
the rest of central and south america, is a
fantastic place, nice people too. Let people
like us who are actually doing trips and writing
how it really is help you decide if you want to
go there or not.
You only live once!

So, Tom, why don't you post your name and your well documented experience. That would be a help. Everything Dee said above is true. I love Mexico. I've been traveling down there off & on all my life. Baja is beautiful, but the fact is, Baja is a grab bag. One should be very familiar with the area and local climate which changes frequently (politically, socially, economically, road conditions, etc.) I'm not saying it's horrifically dangerous, but things that we normally don't think of as a potential problem can be there. Key: Always be well prepared there. You never know what you're going get on any given day.
