We will be coming over from Lynchburg on Friday night. Am trying to recruit two defender owners that I know as well! We will also camp on the island.

What should be expected at this event? Terrain-wise, weather conditions...from you guys that have been in years past.

Weather makes a lot of difference in the trails, and camping coditions. Trails are from completely stock capable to medium difficult. I don't think there are any that are too extreme. There are some hazzards along the way, but all can be gone around. I took a stock disco on all the trails last year. I stayed out of the river, and I couldn't go up one hill by the river, other than that no problems. I did pick up some scratches and a few bumps and bruises though. Definitely fun for the whole family. Get there early for good camping sites. Outhouses for bathrooms and no showers is a downer, other than that exceptionally good time. will be there again, this time not stock.

I'm thinking with all the rain we have had this season, there is going to be some mud! I took my stock truck on all but one or two runs last year and only suffered a minor dent to the running boards (since removed!). So, it's a great time for everyone. I'm still stock (:-() but am hoping to ride with some others for the tougher trails.
I can't wait...counting the days until MAR!

You guys can take me on some tough runs and I promise I don't smell bad!!! :-) And, if my husband brings his Explorer...he will need a ride too! hahahahahaha
Speaking of that, anyone know how many people and vehicles you can bring. Like me and the husband, two cars and an ATV? Can we bring another friend and his Jeep? (hold on...he's not bad. He had a RRC, sold it for a Rubicon b/c he works for a Jeep dealer)

Garret,

The main problem is that I don't even have an automobile! And MAR is about an 11 hour drive and I have no time to spare for such a journey. If I had a motorcycle I might try it, but I don't....

Sus, don't bring any ATVs. Last year those things were moving targets for disgruntled rover drivers. Of course I assume you like your husband...

Ya'll just relax, go out there and try to have fun with it. Make sure ya take lots of pics and maybe some movies.

that is a long haul Max to not have your own ride. hmmm. how about renting something in the area. like a wrangler. just make sure to get the added insurance.

Nope, not certain they were cigarettes :-)

But I know that smell was definately onion soup. He kept it in a great big plastic bag around his neck. Said he was Captain America.

I don't know man....Just looking forward to seeing everyone again and getting in trouble.

Paul's having problems with the Pig. I think a bake sale is in order.

LOL,

Paul is having problems with his rig. But last time I checked it was LRNA that was picking up the tab.

So then LRNA can have a big ass bake sale to refund the money they put into Pauls truck.

Paul man, you are going to have a brand new truck by the end of this year!!

but even more fun not to have to deal with broken stuff to begin with. it is yet to be determined if LRNA will be doing anything. it should not have even gotten to this point. should have been in and out and over with. none of this pissing around shit.
i am staying away from you bad seeds this year. you will find me handing out Fresca's, cup cakes with jimmies and purple Barney ballons this year. and maybe some "i am high on life" bumper stickers. :-)

Damn Man....I get no breaks!:-)

After much deliberation and peer pressure; I am now planning on going.

Currently the front driveshaft and t-case is being reworked. As far as the engine goes; that's another story. We are still 5 weeks out so hopefully, I'll have the Pig back in one piece. That 3" kit I ordered from EE is still in the Garage. When the Pig comes home, the kit goes on.

Now, getting back to MAR. Last year I took some folks out on some night runs and they were cool enough to provide post-run martini's. These folks had a bar in the back of a Rangie which was parked in the camping area. Very Very nice. I think it was Will Bobbit and his father riding in the back of the Pig when that Tree ran through the woods and savagely attacked my front passenger door.

Jason, that guy who smelled like onions? Was that the british dude with the wide brim hat? If so, I couldn't understand a word he said until after midnight and the scotch was flowing:-)My favorite part of the whole event is late night cuban cigars and old single malt scotch; listening to incredible amounts of BS spew forth!

For those of you who want a ride this year, You will have to fight my 84 lb dog for a spot. He (sherman) can be bribed with beverage.

If all goes as planned we will be there. Hopefully with a handful of the Philly Rovers Crew. Which begs the question....what is the policy for bringing dogs there?

I brought my dog last year and she was great. BUT she is very obedient, trained and extremely quiet. She also likes to ride in the Rover and she did every trail that we did! :-)
She camped with us in the tent and had a great time.

Randy,

I have never heard people complain about dogs and Sherman rode in the Pig all during UWH. After all, you are camping. :-) I am sure people will frown if you bring in an animal like Cujo or some other maneater.

I looked at the MAR schedule and am trying to figure out when the wheeling is. Do trail rides depart all day, at certain times, or ???? And is this centered around events and socializing, or less-formal trailrides?

There is no "scheduling" of trail rides...like at a Jeep event. You can go out almost any time, but there is an actual competition event when trucks are out on the toughest tracks. It's the RTV. I basically watched everything last year then headed out on Sunday morning/afternoon when things quieted down and did some trail runs. This year, I'm gonna get with these guys more and head out together....but there are always opportunities.
They don't have the descriptions listed on the website yet.

The longest line of trucks that I ever encountered last year (on a trail) was less than 10 ... so that's hardly "insanely crowded". Sure there were alot of trucks at the event but, I'd guess that less than half of them did *all* of the trails.

At some of the more challenging sections, about 18 rovers were in line to drive through this big mud hole. Yes it was a long wait but very fun to watch.

FWIW, if you go out early on Sunday, it is beautiful and peaceful. I went out and there wasn't another truck on the trail. It was very calm you could stop to look at the river and the various clearings along the trails.

The only problem with this is getting stuck! I got stuck twice but the winch on the front of my truck fixed the problem quick :-). Of course, there will be someone along within an hour on the same trail so you will not get hopelessly stuck.

FYI, the pond at "Pearls Pond" is finally full. Four or five years after construction, we finally got a we enough winter to fill it up.

The landowner says the lake has been stocked with bass. Catch-and-release, though. For fishing along the James, you'll need a valid VA permit.

And yes, it is "continuous open season" on ATV's. Drag the carcass to the game checking station at rally control. Only Rover vehicles are permitted on the trails. No exceptions.

The premier event at the rally is the "Aluminium Man Triathlon" which combines mechanical and pioneering tasks with a 12-stage, gen-u-wine UK-style trials course. The tasks start at 10 AM on Saturday, with the trials course beginning at 1 PM. Prior to the trials, no one is permitted on those trails, all of which are out on the island.

In short, this is the biggest Rover rally in the country.

Cheers

I agree with Max, we went out on Sunday and actually followed one other truck...no lines at all. I never had a problem with traffic and I didn't see any one drinking and driving excessively. I had a great time and intend on having an even better one this year! Just mailed my registration today! :-)

It is not the Jeeps, only saw two last year, or the 2 Gwagens. They just want to keep it exclusive, and I understand. I was hoping to go with my TJ and the DIsco, but alas, only the Disco can wheel now. I think the prices will continue to go up until the numbers come down. LOTS of people there last year, some said too many.

If my brother comes down from Potomac Falls in his car, where would he park? Obviously, they're limiting trails to Land Rover, but what about folks who are coming out to meet friends or family there?

Well, fellas, it looks like I won't be able to make it to MAR this year...too much stuff for school, and The Rover won't be up and running until closer to the end of Oct. I'll see you at SAE, though...best of luck to everyone, and take some good pictures.
