Getting a small group together this Saturday morning to wheel around the Crabtree Falls/Shoe Creek area at around 8:30am. Have a few Jeep people, an Xterra, and my rover. Need more Landy representation!! :-)
If anyone is interested, zap me an email!

Sus, we run that trail a lot. If you have time you should check out sherando after you get to the top of shoe creek.

OR ... Instead stop by the MAR Site and help with the trail prep this saturday! You will get to preview the trails AND man ... err ... woman a chainsaw! Mud, rovers, and 2 cycle smoke. Fun fun Fun!

:-)

Eric, I've only been up the gravel road to the top of Crabtree Meadows...can you tell me a little about which trails are good (for mostly stock trucks)? I saw quite a few leading away from the road.
Also, we were just at Sherando Lake last weekend camping, hiking and canoeing. Is it Big Levels that you are referring to?

Take the gravel road to the top of crabtree meadows then instead of parking in the lot to the left just keep going striaght. The trail will follow the creek down the mtn .. there are 3 water crossings and some beautiful scenery.

Yes, big levels is what I meant by sherando.

A good day is had starting at big levels then riding that to the parkway then from there running crabtree.

If I hadnt already committed to the MAR trail maintenance i would try to meet up with you guys.

Sounds great! We considered doing the trail day as well, but have tickets to the UVA/DUKE game and wouldn't be able to spend much time at the Pond. We are planning to wheel from 8:30 to about 2.
I'll let you know if we get a group out any other time before MAR. :-)

Shoe Creek is best done from the east (or rather south) side. Exit out the Crabtree Meadows side and return via Rt. 56.

Sus...when you say 'pond', do you mean Green Pond at Big Levels? I've tried to find it several times recently without success, but I remember it from back in '73 or so. Supposedly, Green Pond is an ancient peneplain, predating the formation of the Appalachian Mountains.

Shoe creek was awesome! Not too tough for the Rover, only a few spots where I got to test her out...and if I had better tires I would have been unstoppable! There were two new Rubicons in my group that really impressed me...especially being stock! Also had two stock Wranglers, my husband's Explorer Sport, and an OLD Bronco II! Was an interesting trip. The rover and the Rubicons were OBVIOUSLY the best!
