Aaron,

To answer your question about trails, SAE is going to have trails of all levels:

Rich Mountain: Intermediate/Advanced
Anderson Creek: Intermediate
Nimblewill Gap: Beginner

Also we just received 200 acres of private land to use in Dawsonville that we are in the process of cutting trails. I believe the trails will range from Advanced to Beginner but the trails have not been finished.

Rich Mountain is a great 6-8 hour trail up and over a mountain. It is possible to complete the trail without damage (though I have seen damage done and done damage myself) and has every type of obstacle imaginable. The first time I did Rich Mountain, my truck was stock but I came out with a little damage. This is the most rewarding trail of them all for experienced drivers. For 271 pictures of a recent ride to Rich Mountain go to http://kuhtz.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=richmountain

Anderson Creek/Amicalola Falls are great trails with some rock and creek crossings. Excellent for someone who has a slightly modified truck (or a stock truck and wants to see what his/her stock truck is capable of). Although we will probably rate this trail intermediate and suggest a lift or mods similar just so people realize the risks associated with the trail. FOr pictures of a ride to Anderson Creek/Amicalola go to http://www.solaros.com/AmicalolaFalls.html

Nimblewill Gap is a scenic area with miles of forest service roads (some less maintained than others). This area is perfect for beginner/stock trucks.

Hope this helps!

Robb,

Thank you so much for the info. Who knows, I might actually get to meet you for once. :-)

I'll be down on the 14th, what time.. I'm not sure yet. Depends on what time my wife can get off of work unfortunately, but we will be there. I did quite alot of damage to my truck at Rich Mtn., and I'd sure like to go back and go through unscathed if possible, but I won't ride Rich Mtn. if it's raining out! :-)

Robert,

In my post I thought of stating for damage "see Robert Sublett."

If it is raining we will attack Rich Mountain from the other side! The trail is easier coming up the easy side and down the hard side. Don't worry. I will not be the trail leader for Rich Mountain.

Anderson Creek will be doable from both directions rain or shine.

Also, at the campsite there is a creek for those who dare.

Well, it's looking like my lifetime best friend may be moving to CT right around SAE now. If that happens, I may well be trailering a J*(P to CT from TN, and not attending SAE:-( We'll just have to wait and see... Adios.>RS

I would love to attend, I'need more info though, I'm really looking forward to see what this baby is made of, and if I'm really the great driver that I always thought, It seems like there's still some time left for me to get some stuff for the Disco, and since is pure stock, what would you recomend to start with?

I'll start that debate: Sliders are the first thing you should get.

I must agree with Steve. The best mod you can have on Rich Mountain is sliders. There are v-ditches on Rich Mtn and if you slide down into one while trying to straddle the ditch the slider (with a nerf bar (RTE)) keeps the side of your truck from damage.

The last time I went the only person with damage was someone who had a lift a bigger tires but did not have rock sliders and he slide into a ditch and scratched up the lower portion of both his passenger side doors.

Marco,

If you do not get any mods by SAE I would recommend the Anderson Creek trail. It is challenging and is more than a good starting point for judging your off-road abilities. It gives a beginner driver all he/she can handle.

Marco, I'd start with some humility....that kinda talk will get ya in trouble....especially if you get stuck or bust something. Just a friendly suggestion.

1st change from stock should be diff guards, 2nd should be sliders, 3rd a lift, 4th get rid of the air dam, 5th some bigger tires.

All right then, I'm printing this page so I can remember the basic mods that I'll be needing, and then start one by one, thanks for that, I didn't mean to lack humility, It's just that I've always though I was a good driver but never had the chance to check if it was true, I have never been in a truly 4x4 situation, so if I get stuck (and most likely will ) I'll be the first to laugh at myself scratch my head and ask for help...I write all this in a mmm...cool way? peace...

"Cool way" accepted. Being a good driver and being a capable off-roader are really two different skill sets. With you having never off-roaded before you will see what I mean when you try it out. Have fun, enjoy, be careful and be safe, and remember....if you do unsafe things, you not only risk your rig, but maybe others too, not to mention the time to haul your butt out of trouble....luckily rescuing is a favorite thing to do for many here!

Apreciate the advice, I'll really take it, and once on the road...well...actually off the road I'll try to be Mr. Safe..., and try not to get into to much trouble

Art, as for the Georgia clay, you'll get your chance, as with any rain, the trails get good!!!

I'm jealous, I really wanted to go. Can't do it, Bill and Rachel Burke are coming here and I begin my driving lessons (ha ha) with him that same weekend.

Since I HAVE been getting more practice driving my HEAVY truck on the highways these days, I have been wondering about GA trail rides. Does anyone up there have a club that organizes monthly trail rides??

Have fun, Jamie

Yes Jamie, the club is called SOLAROS.
www.SOLAROS.com
The topic name "who's going to solaros?" should be "who's going to SAE?". Solaros has monthly trail rides, cookouts, camping, etc.

My bad....I'm afraid we've gotten into the habit up here in the NE of calling the SAE event Solaros.
