Hello:

Old North State is in the planning stage for a trip to Caney Fork, NC the weekend (tentative) of 16 January. The trail only takes a few hours to drive up and some of us are planning to camp on the mountain Saturday night. Those folks not camping will drive back down that afternoon.

While we have the area knowledge we need to get up the mountain, we are short knowledge of trails that exist in the area that are a public right of way. We are hoping to do a light night drive, but don't want to end up on some one's property, or lost.

Does any one have any knowledge of the area that might be able to shed some light on the subject?

Thanks,

Dan

I am good to go, but camping in January? I'm not sure. I was talking to Charles Jenkins recently and he was interested in doing some exploring up there. He said that he went all over that place when he was at WCU. I will keep an eye on this post and the Old North State site for updates. Charles

Me, I love winter camping, but it can be the definition of misery for some folks.

Frank Avent has contacted me stating he has solid knowledge of the area and intends to join us, assuming his crew-cab discovery project is complete.

That's only about 120 miles from me in Chattanooga, TN area. I'd be game for joining you for a day trip. Not real interested in camping though. Is there a fee to get in the trails or do I have to pay anything to Old North State? Also, for those not wanting to brave the January cold, would anyone be interested in joining me back down the mountain?

Steven,

No fees. While I might suggest that you become a member of what I believe is the finest Land Rover organization on the planet, the Old North State, where the $25 membership is a mere pittance when compared to the high honor it delivers, even that isn't required.

Just show up and ride along. I suspect most folks will not stay on top, so you should have good company for the trip down.

We hope you can join us.

2 more questions:

Is this a "Land Rover dealership" event?

What is trail difficulty for this place?

'Cause I'm still interested in going, but my vehicle is still sort of stock so I'd like to know what I'm getting into, and I know how dealership events are with their "permission slips" and such.

Otherwise, I hope to see you out there.

Steven:

Stock should do fine. As with any trail weather conditions can make the easiest trail a mess. It is not uncommon for someone to show up at a trail ride for the first time and leave their car in the parking lot, catch a ride with some one else to see what it is like. You can certainly learn alot just by watching !!

Last Uwharrie trip we had three folks ride along. You acertainly not looked down upon for being smart!

No it is not a dealer event, but I have known Mike out in Asheville for many years and we have invited them along.

Hope we get to see you!!

Thanks Matt!

What a great day. Thanks to every one for making this such a good time. After you all left, Scott and I found a couple of very nice stock vehicle trails that went through some beautiful areas. The wind howled all night long, it rained most of the night, the fog was so thick you could not see ten feet from the fire, and for the first twenty-five minutes of the drive down the next morning our headlights gave us about 15 feet of minimum visibility. It was a perfect adventure!

Charles thanks so much for putting this together for us, what a great time.
I would also like to thank:
Mitchell
Steve
Charles
Josh
David
Bruce
Matt
and Kirk for making this such a great time.

I am putting together another trip out there for 27 March. The details are on the Adventure Calendar at www.theoldnorthstate.org

Cheers,
Dan

P.S. If you send the pictures to my home email it will be easier. The Society mailbox has a fairly limited capacity. Thanks, again
