UPDATE
FREELANDER WASHINGTON DC ROAD RALLEY
(but all LR enthusists are welcome!)

Saturday January 17, 2004

Route Begins in Annapolis, Maryland
City Dock Parking Lot:

1:30 PM - 2:30 PM Meet up at Annapolis City Dock public parking. Go to the rear of the parking area near Phillips Seafood Restaurant and along the actual dock area ("ego alley"). We can gather up the cars, meet and greet, get some coffe, ice cream or whatever before heading out. Will also pass out route maps, discuss the days agenda, stopping places, etc. and get Steve's home info. for the "mixer" at his house later that day.

Annapolis City Dock - Mapquest:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?country=US&countryid=250&addtohistory=&addr ess=8+Dock+Street&city=Annapolis&state=MD&zipcode=&submit=Get+Map

2:30 PM We leave City Dock area and proceed enroute to and around Washington DC. I am speaking w/ the Annapolis Dealer, we may take the route via their location, or they may bring an 04 Freelander and Discovery over to meet us at City Dock. If they do, we'll proceed directly into DC and by pass the Dealership.

2:30 PM - 4:00 PM I've mapped out a route in and around the DC area which will take us close by nearly every major monument including the Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Smithsonian Museums, Supreme Court, Library of Congress and Arlington national Cemetary. I have ear-marked stopping places along the way which include the southern tip of Haines Point in East Potomac Park to re-group if we get spread out because of signals, mis-turns or traffic (traffic is expected to be moderate and not a significant problem).

East Potomac Park Map:

4:00 PM - 4:30 PM After completing the rest of the route, we will re-group just across the Potomac River at the Marine Corps Memorial (Iwo Jima statue) in Arlington, Virginia to "debrief" say our "good-byes" and/or prepare for the trip to Steve's home for the mixer. Anyone who missed out on the earlier Annapolis meet can catch up with us at the Memorial to get info. to Steve's home.

The trip was a modest success. We had Freelander owners from as far away as NYC, Ohio and Deleware drive into Annapolis to join local residents for the DC Rallye.

Kyle,

You use a signature line of "blow me" and they let you be a moderator... guess I missed something about common courtesy - or was it common sense?

Well I figured it out, I think... But I still don't understand it. Unless the administrators of this site are so ill-mannered that they simply don't give a damn what type of character they portray.

"Bill , a few hundred Rovers make that commute every single day..."

As do I - but the idea was that Freelander owners got together is a plus for Land Rover, and you don't see a "few hundred" of them running around like you do Disco's; many came from rather long distances and had never seen the Nation's Capitol; as you know trials in the immediate DC region are somewhat scarce unless you head southwest or northwest quite a ways, so it was a good an excuse as any for some friends from the local area to get together; and sometimes new owners just don't want to take their rigs off-road and risk scratching the wife's daily driver, and this was a good way to introduce them to other owners as a first step.

For someone I'm supposing wants to market their site to Land Rover owners, you've got a pretty foul mouth and condensending attitude. If you're from the area, you should have considered coming out and meeting some of us.

LOL,

Kyle, You must remember that Land Rover didn't build the Freelander to go offroad. This is just a natural progression of what Land Rover sold them, which is all the "cool" without the hassle of going offroad.

Some would disagree with the statement that "LR didn't build Freelanders to go offroad". The car is certainly capable of taking you many more places off-road than anything in its "class" and then some - but you're right, its not built to compete with a Disco or a Defender. But it is a Land Rover in ever sense of the word, and it's owners have every right to be proud they own a Land Rover and enjoy a bit of the commraderie that LR is so known for. As for the old Disco vs Freelander comparisons, they are as fruitless as comparing apples and oranges - the Freelander will whoop a Disco on a narrow windy mountain "paved" road every time! ;-)

"the Freelander will whoop a Disco on a narrow windy mountain "paved" road every time!"

so will an Audi or a BMW, why not get one of those?? not to get all the freelander owners fired up, but one look at the truck and you can really tell they didnt build it to go "off-road." Sure its capable, but without a low range its not going that far off-road. Yes, I have wheeled them and for what they were, I was impressed, but lets not get crazy here. If it were "really" intended to go off road, the muffler wouldnt be the lowest point on the entire vehicle. Road rallys are cool.. some people really dig them, but this site is problay not the best spot to post pictures of it. :-)

Bill,

Why don't you bring your Freelandy on our "rally" to Belize?

We had a Freelander on our Mexico to Canada trip, and I thought it did very well. Had a little trouble with traction-control at Moab on some slick-rock, but kept up with Defenders and Discos fine in my opinion. Articulation is rather sad.

Blue, that is funny. It was a parade! Did they toss some candy on the freeway in their freelandies? 6 hours later and I am still laughing, I have no idea why.

Thanks Bill for posting it. I am glad you did it and think it is very cool to do. BTW, did you guys have to get a permit to do this? (you know, the parade permit)

Okay,I have calmed down a bit now. In all seriousness, I can appreciate what you did. I have organized many road rallies and dual sport events for motorcycles. There is something about getting a group of like minded individuals that have similar vehicles to drive around and check sites out. I am actually putting on a Country Road Excursion in Indiana in a couple of weeks that is basically an excuse to get together and drive, checking out the scenery and crappy roads.

It's hard work putting an "event" on like you did, and it is rewarding when people show up and enjoy themselves.

Don't stop doing it just because we are having a bit of fun. It's winter time and we are all getting a bit delirious (exception for Kyle, seasons don't matter).

Thanks for the kind words, I had fun doing it and it was my first attempt at organizing this type of event. BTW: the same group of Freelander owners does get together and run trails too, maybe Kyle and I will cross paths in the dirt one day.

Erik - I'd LOVE to meet you guys in Belize!!!

I just arrived in Tennesse and will be at the Thatched Roof Garage tomorrow w/ Dave if anyone wants to run some "trails" in the afternoon, we should be done putting "stuff" on my Hippo.
