Details

Date: Saturday, March 27, 2004.

Trail: Caney Fork, in Jackson County east of Sylva, NC.

MEETING POINTS:

The meeting point will be 9:30 Saturday morning at Wal-Mart in Sylva. Wal-Mart is located at 1230 East Main Street, Sylva, NC 28779.

The PLAN

Head for the trail at 10:00.

Eat lunch on trail ... and be at campsite by early afternoon (2 or so, depending on trail conditions)

A night ride for those who are interested.

For those not camping, plan on about three hours to get back down?

Break camp about 9:30 Sunday morning and be back to the black top by noon.

Directions

To Sylva from the Asheville area:

Take I-40 West to Exit 27 (US-19/US-23 toward Waynesville).

Take US-23 South to Exit 85 at Sylva (US-23 Business toward Cullowhee).

Turn left onto NC-107 East.

Wal-Mart is on the right about 0.5 miles.

CAMPING/LODGING:

We will be camping on the mountain, if you would like to join us. There is lodging in the area, last year some folks stayed at the Comfort Inn in Sylva Comfort Inn. Their rates are around $69 per night. Someone suggested the Balsam Mountain Inn located between Sylva and Waynesville Balsam Inn info here.

Everyone should bring their own lunch to eat on the trails. Campers will of course need dinner and breakfast.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Happy Rovering!

Dan,

I too would be interested in this one. I had a good time last trip. Maybe I'll even stay the night this time around.

The trail is pretty easy. Stock Disco and 4runner should not have a problem. Dan Ratcliffe rolled over on his side last time, but he had to work at it. It is a great ride. Charles

That was the funniest damn thing. I can still picture it in my head. I was actually backing down about 5 feet to try another line, stopped, and it just laid on it's side. Because I have been so close to rolling over so often, I didn't expect it to actually happen! What a surprise.

The roll over finally convinced me to replace those stock in-line rims with the wolf rims. Any one who has watched the beast has commented on how many time they thought I would roll over, even on black top!

The new rims give a 2 3/4 off set, instead of 0. A lot of 88's have the 109 rim on them that give about an inch offset. This greater offset will also help with the side of the car dragging along the side of a ditch as the outer edge of the tires are now nearly even with the body panels.

My turning radius has dropped a great deal as well. I adjusted the steering stops and it is amazing.

So far it has really made a difference. I can corner at 25-30 mph with out hanging two tires in the air. I think the new tough part is learning my tire placement as I drive off road.

Looks like we will all have a good time on this trip.

I was thinking about going is the trip good for the family? Or, is it more adult oriented. Don't want to be a bother.

Hey Perry Ray, I've been on several trips up there and there has always been kids with no problem. Most times there are a couple of wives also. I will have my son and a friend of his along. They are 14 year old neanderthal boys, but dont' let that stop you. Charles Allen

Justin,

I had hoped to head up the mountain on Friday night, but business travel is getting in the way. I do plan on pitching my tent at a KOA just west of Ashville Friday night.

Perry:

I think you would be suprised at the number of families that come out. We are a well behaved lot, and it is great to see the folks having fun as a family. Hope you can make it.

Hey Dan,

I'm not sure if you've already left...was hoping to post on the board but I've been traveling on business too this week.

Both Patrick and I are planning to meet you on Saturday morning. Just so you know, here's the headcount for our group:
- Patrick & 2 children
- Drew & 1 child
- Jim & 1 child (new guy...trying to convert another one to the Rover crowd!)

We are all planning to camp overnight.

Looking forward to the trip. See you in the morning!

Thanks Dan for coordinating a great trail ride. All of us - particularly the kids - really had a terrific time! Many of us have commented on the campsite where we stayed at Saturday night - perfect location with great views of the Smokies. Without a doubt, this was my best outing with ONLSRS (even though it wasn't my weekend to avoid trail damage)!

I've already uploaded the pictures from my camera to an online photo album. Here is the link:

Should anyone else want me to post their photos online from the trail ride, then send them to me at:

drew.porta@bankofamerica.com

Of course, I'd really be interested in seeing photos where I was tipped over on two wheels. If you send me photos, please reply to this post indicating that you sent photos via email (in case the spam blocker at work redirects the photos elsewhere).

It was great meeting everyone and I hope to see you all at the next event!

Drew (& Hampton)

Thanks Charles J., Charles A., and Mitchell for the pictures! We've got about 51 pictures in the album so far and I still need to touch base with Patrick and Jim for some more!

Hey ya'll, quick question: what happened to that disco? First, attempted to strap from the front, then the back? How did it happen?

Sometime I want to run that trail with my 109. But is that section just too tight? Other than that it looks like a nice little drive through the mountains.

That was me...we took the trail less traveled and I promptly got stuck. Basically, I was coming up out of the stream and while making a right hand turn I found myself cross-axled in a very tight spot. Trying to go forward the wheels just spun...could only go backwards about 2 feet until I crunched the quarter panel in the side of the cliff.

So, first we tried adding weight on the front end by having 3 guys climb on to the bumper. Next, we tried pulling me out forward and that tipped me up on 2 wheels on both attemtps. Since I couldn't go forward and couldn't go backwards we pulled my Disco sideways a little so I could back out.

My second try through had more speed and the Disco went right through like a champ.

After breaking a tail lamp and putting a dimple in the quarter panel, my lesson about having momentum is well learned.
