I'm pretty sure my truck will be done by then, I'll join you guys on Sat if you don't mind the tag along. I'd like to see if my new drivetrain will have anything for that obstacle at the bottom of dictum.

You are running more or less the same set up as I am, so you should be able to walk up Dictum. Hug it hard left. Like this:

Count me in Marco. Glad you're feeling better.
Did you ever find tires?
Hey Mike! YOU have plans for Harrisburg? Sounds like you were just included in someone else's plans!;-)
We still need to get together soon.
I have a full set of OME shocks and a steering damper on the way. I'm hoping to get them on this week.
Oh yeah, that mini van is still on Stone Camp but you can get around it if you fold your p-side mirror in.
Daniel, I'll try to get a decent picture of the disco for your site.

Can't make Sat. Sun is a possability. Was just up at Rausch this past weekend. Had a great time with a group from D-90 and R.O.V.E.R.S. The trails are getting harder after all the snow and rain. Ya'll should have fun.

120%?! But that's impossible!
Tires make a hell of a difference.
We can figure out when to meet and who's going later this week.
Chad, any chance you could lose the running boards? It'll make our option on trails a lot broader. We can get stock trucks down Stone Camp but running boards may scrape in places.
Tyler, I plan on tying one on Saturday night (recent freedom from relationships and peer pressure!) but I can play on Sunday if you can make it.

Already lost the running boards. That was my Sunday afternoon project. Looks better, more clearance, and I don't have to worry about banging them up. I'm still not sure about this weekend though. I'll get back to you.

I did Stone Camp Sat. with the running boards on...One spot was a bit tricky but I managed to finesse my way through it without hitting them. But no worries now.

Cool. Put those boards on EBay, someone will want them.
I can tell you from experiance going up the other way is harder. I'll try again soon with the new tires. We did it in the snow.
Where else did you guys go after I left you?

Hey marco, I'd like to go -- my bumper was really damaged. The lady hit me hard enough to bend my stock recovery point to the frame.

Once I wrap the chain around the bumper and pull it out and hack off my air dam, I should be good to go. As far as recovery points go -- I have one big ass recovery point -- my whole front bumper.

Anyway, count me in, I'll let you know if something comes up. Oh, and where are you guys meeting? I'm @ Virginia Tech, but I'll make the 2 hr drive to harrisonburg. Are you guys wheelin' on sunday, too? I might be able to hangout in town overnight if theres a place to stay.

You are an early bird Walter, 5:22? I did not changed the tires yet, I'll try my hardest 'til friday, but I'm still going. How about the Sheetz at 9:00 ? I will be leaving DC Before 7:00 But I have to be back by evening, so staying overnight will not be possible for me this time. Where will you be coming from Dave?

I'll be coming from Blacksburg, VA. Its exit 118 off I-81, roughly 2 hrs sounth of harrisonburg. I have no clue where the sheetz is or where 33 is. But I do have a road atlas, perhaps I can find it? It wouldn't happen to be the sheetz travel center off the mount jackson exit, would it? Its like a truck stop w/ a huge sheetz and a wendys.

As far as my buddy coming along -- I asked her, but she has to work. Seems like if I'm not working, she is. Working @ sheetz, btw :-)

I'm trying to get her to call off or find someone to cover for her. I just happened to have that day off.

Never been on these trails, ok for stock disco?

Looks like this is a go, so I better be getting out the hacksaw and cutting!

I am a bit of an early bird. I had to go to PA this morning to do some additional set up on one of our machines.
It may be kinda slick this weekend with the rain we've gotten. If you have straps, bring em.
Dave,I guess I'll have to spot my own half nekkid chicks then. We have the largest Super Wally Mart on the east coast! Not only that, we have 2!
Take the exit for 33West, go up to the 3rd light and you'll see Sheetz on the right.
9:00? Sounds good to me.

Is the trip Jeep-er friendly? I know a guy w/ a jeep grand cherokee who might want to go. I haven't talked to him yet, so I'm not sure if he can go. His truck is stock with 2" spring spacers, I think. I guess jeeps can get through this trail, never been there before.

Shouldn't be a problem Dave. Bring him along. Also how late we stay out depends on how many trails you want to do. None of them are real long.
It looks like maybe 4 so far.

Can we get a list of cellphone numbers of people who are going? Just in case something happens or one of us gets lost on the way to rt 33 or something.

If you guys don't want to post them online, (and I can't blame you) then how about e-mailing them to the people who plan on going?

What do you think of this?

Well, I've put about an 1.5 hrs into my truck to fix the bumper/ headlight mount. I've got the air dam and foglights off and I just got the headlight straight. Murphy's law struck again -- as soomn as I was able to straighten it, I blew the headlight -- figures.

Well, I'm heading to bed -- if I can sleep, I'm like a kid on Christmas eve, the anticipation is killing me :-)

It went pretty good.
The lower gate at 2nd mountain was closed.
We messed around on the Loop Trail then did stone camp.
I went out again on Sunday and did Stone Camp from the other direction then went by Dry River dam and the Loop trail again.
Snowed like hell up on the ridges and the wind was incredible! Scenery was beautful!
I'm lucky I live where I do and can get to those place in 20 minutes or so.
We'll do it again soon.

Joe,
I've owned Rovers for about 4 years now (still a newbie) I live in Stafford and don't know of any clubs. If that continues to be the case...want to start one (and I don't mean one where you admire the waxed/polished state of your vehicle)?? Perhaps the added peer pressure to use my beast will get me on trails more. You will find that it's hard to find places to wheel in the immediate area. How is your truck outfitted?

Dave,

I just bought the truck last weekend with about 72k miles on it. At the moment it's completely stock, though I'm getting 255/70 16 BFG A/T KOs put on this week. I want to take a slow approach to modifications, so I'd like to take it out and see how well it does now, and then get an idea of what changes I want to make. Springs might be coming fairly soon, since the truck leans to the passenger side (about an inch difference between the two sides), and it bothers me a little. It has SLS so I'm not sure what to do with the rear end yet.
Your disco might make a pretty good model to follow :-) Did you do the mods yourself?

Whoops, nope. Meant that for Dave Y. His Disco is puurrty.

As far as the smashed bumper mod goes, I'm guessing that was a DIY? How long did it take? Did you need any special tools? Would you recommend that I DIY it myself or should I take it to a professional to have it done? :-)

Joe -- Well, I had the first section of it done by a professional, an old lady in the parking lot of walmart. That's where I had my headlight and turn signal relocation and structural modifications. This part took about 2 seconds to complete and roughly 1 hr of paperwork at cost of $5,000, to be paid at a later date.

The duct tape and airdam trimming was a DIY a few days later in the Home Depot parking lot. Took roughly 20 min of cutting and unbolting and 2 bandaids -- bent chrome is rather sharp.

I later further modified the structure by attaching a 5/16" chain to the bumper and hooking the other end to a friends truck and yanking, this provided more clearance for my turning radius to keep my tires from rubbing, as often happens with structural and/or tire upgrades. I used a 5/16" chain, but I feel that a smaller size would have been just a effective. However, make sure you use clevis grab-style hooks, not slip type. Also be sure to protect the chrome bumper with a floormat or suitable blanket to prevent scratches.

After having a $500 quote to further modify the headlight structure, I decided to invest in two specialty tools -- crowbar and a BFH (big f***ing hammer, for those who are not mechanically inclined) This part of the modification is almost complete. I was able to use another speciaty tool comprised of a strong adhesive applied to plastic and cloth in a light grey tone, commonly referred to as "duct tape." This provided a nice contrast to my blue disco, somewhat like pinstriping, but only to accent the modified portions of my bumper. (I don't want to draw attention to the stock part of my truck.)

I've received several compliments on my modification, the most notable from walter, who said it made my truck look hardcore. Others have come from friends who have a crimson tint the the rear portion of their necks. They complimented my industrious and tasteful use of the bonding element.

If you're even in the Blacksburg area, be sure to stop by, I'm sure I can help you out.

For further information, check out my "old people piss me off" thread under the general discussion area.

lol, Good read. College tuition well spent. Now you can make those student loan payments and not feel that it was wasted.

Walter,
I'll surely keep my eye on the board. I'm a complete newbie to offroading so I'm definitely going to want to go along with someone who knows where to go, what to take, how to do it, etc.

Wow! That was a good read! Those damned old ladies.....I've had my run in with at least one. After she ran the stop light and plowed into me she explaims (when the police got there) "I had my signal on!". Anway, thanks for the complements on the truck. Many of my role models are on this board. I did all of the work except putting on the front bumper. It came off my 98 and I had to take it back to Rovertym for a modified fit. I am pretty happy with everything so far and continue to modify it. HD driveshafts will be added this weekend.

Good call on the tires I had AT's and liked them, I just went more aggressive. You will figure out what you want or need for that matter, as your truck changes. Some stick with those.

Walter, thanks for the invite. I am itching to go and want to do Rocky Run really bad. My truck is being worked on this weekend and I will be away. If others are interested, how about making a run one of the next couple of weekends?

Joe and Marco, if you haven't considered it yet, join ROAV. You might still be able to get in on the spring rallye: www.roav.org I joined just last year and got to go to the Mid-Atlantic Rallye (open to non-members also) Man, it was a blast!

I'll try to stay with this thread so we can do some great wheeling.

Dave, count me in for a run in the near future.

Dave I already have a prin out of the form to become a member of ROAV, although it would be nice to be a founder member of a new club too, Hey Dave S how is that "strong adhesive applied to plastic and cloth in a light grey tone, commonly referred to as "duct tape." "holding? do you know if it comes in Alpine white?, just in case I need it in the future.Puppy if some one knows those trails that is Walter.

Are there enough local (nova area) guys for a new club? Being a founding member sounds good. Does anyone belong to Blue Ridge? If so, how is it?

What the hell....a new club is born! I guess a few is a good start. I will supply the website. ....need a name;-) No april fools...chime in with thoughts/participation (no dog jokes please;-)

Unfortunately, this weekend is not good for me, truck not trail functional and will be up in NYC. My mechanic just asked me to postpone the work I was to have done this weekend till next, so the earliest for me is 24th or 25th.

PaintBall huh? ....my hobby/vice list is pretty full.

Regis,

I was considering joining Blue Ridge as well ROAV. Blue Ridge certainly seems organized and active, judging from their site. Their events seem to take place mostly in the western part of WV, though, which is a bit of a haul.

Dave,
"NoVa Rovers Club"? works for me. I'm definitly planning on joining ROAV too.

I think a Northern VA Rover club would be pretty cool... but do you guys have ANY idea how big a pain in the arse it is to start and maintain a club?
I'd be willing to help to an extent- I run a web based club and am on the Board of Directors of ROAV already. I'll help where I can, I just think it would be cool to have local guys to trade parts and tools with.

I have no idea what exactly is involved when starting/maintaining a club. Is it that much trouble? It just sounds like a good idea to have a local club, especially if Blue Ridge is mostly running events in western WV.
Dave, I like "NoVa Rovers Club" or "Old Dominion Rovers Club".

This is very exciting, I 'know that is expensive and time comsuming as well but I'd love to start a new club even a low budget one, lets find out what is necesary to start and mantain one, and lets star exchanging e mails and phone numbers, also may be we should all meet one of this nights somewere, just to discuss this matter, cheers

S.C.,

You certainly may have a point. You would know better than I. I'm really just looking for some local people to start running trails with once in a while and maybe lend a hand or some advice on working on my truck occasionally (their truck too. It's always good to experiment on someone else's truck first :-) ) This is as good a place as any I can think of to find those people.

IMHO the ones interested should meet and start slowly, start acting like a club, and then acording to everybodys needs and interests form the club, in the meanwhile obtain as much info as possible for the club,...

Marco, the map I have is the Virginia Atlas and Gazeteer available from any book store.
Maps are also available from the U.S. Geological Survey. Those maps are much more detailed then the Gazeteer.
Dan Chapman is the one that really knows the trails. We need to get him to go with us soon.

Starting a new club would be a pain. I belong to BRLRC www.brlrc.org and SV4W www.sv4w.org I would just hook up with one or both of them.

Wow...hard to keep up with email and the posts;-)
I do like the names: "NoVa Rovers Club" and "Old Dominion Rovers Club". I can certainly leverage my resources where a site and automation of it for that matter are concerned. There is nothing worse that good intentions to start something and then finding the difficulty in maintaining it....leading to 2 year old info. While I can do it, one thing I don't want to do is have a bulletin board....duplicating a website such as the one we are on now....at least in that sense.

So, let's meet sometime in the near term and begin discussion about forming something...formal or informal. Right now, the last weekend of the month looks good for me, we could make a run of it.

As far as "my" mechanic goes, they are my new friends at West Chester Land Rover in PA. Tibor up there comes highly recommended. It's a haul for me but worth it. My secondary one would be the dealership down in Richmond VA.

I agree with Dave about duplicating discoweb, I have a hard enough time keeping up with all of my email addresses and bulletin boards as it is.
I am in for the last weekend of the month.
Dave, in which part of PA is West Chester LR?

One thing I would seriously consider is maybe using ROAV as a vehicle to get Northern VA people together. Why re-create a club that exists? One flaw with ROAV is the day-to-day interaction isn't there for those of us who like to hit the trails often... maybe I can fix that.
If not- we should at least build an email list and/or post coming events in a specific place.

S.C.,

I just mailed off my ROAV membership app. today but from the looks of their site, I don't see much in the way of a forum or mailing list. We could, of course, just continue to use D-Web. Or there's also groups.yahoo.com.

I'm going to look into expanding the site there so it's easier to meet up with people. Having yet another forum would kinda suck though, but might be necessary.
There's a section on my web site for recruiting for trail runs, but we don't talk about my site here... I try to avoid the pile-ons that follow when people find out that my Disco shares the driveway with a.... a... umm.... Freelander.
The members list at ROAV will be sent to members, but not posted to avoid spammers etc.
